1 Photovoltaic Systems Basics

A photovoltaic system consists of several components, such as solar panels, inverters, batteries, charge controllers, and grid connections. The grid connections are used to transfer electricity to or from the grid, depending on the demand and supply.

I started working my way to Power Electronics specialization since 2017. My particular sub-specialization is Solar Energy or Solar PV Systems. I'm concentrating more on standards development or adaption and I'll apply this to the drafting of our electronics code for solar pv systems.

The most important issue in solar energy is the knowledge and skills of power electronics. A solar energy system consists of several converters. which usually includes a DC/DC converter, battery charger and inverter. Each of these converters has its own challenges. For example, the efficiency of the entire system is one of the most important parameters of a solar system in which all converters are involved. For this reason, anyone who wants to work in this field must always keep himself updated in terms of technology like been familiar with new wide-bandgap semiconductor.

With my experience, I think most important skill for any power electronics engineer is ability to simulate topologies using simulation software using Matlab and then bring that into actual hardware.

In order to start working as a power electronics engineering. You can start by learning simulation and controls of converters like DC/DC, DC/AC, AC/DC. Now to make simulation in reality you should learn Altium Designer for PCB design. If you know this two better then you have high chances of being selected for power electronics engineer position and hands on experience in lab you will get once you started working full time.
