What are the signs that your product is ready to launch?

“If you cannot explain your product to 5 year old under 30 seconds then you have failed”. This was our mantra for the last few years. We needed to ensure that our messaging was simple enough that a 5 years old can understand it. Famous example for credit cards was “pay later”. What we usually do is the following 1) After defining the jobs to be done and developing a concept that is refined with the customers we refine the value proposition 2) we focus on benefit not feature 3) we capture analogies from consumer regular environment for inspiration 4) we build comparison matrix between us and competition in terms of benefit and value proposition messaging 5) we Define emotional entry point(fear, ambition, happiness, focus) 6) build it

A value proposition isn't just a tagline; it's the soul of your product or service. It answers the pivotal question: "Why should your audience care?" ??

A value prop is great for internal purposes. A more effective approach is communicating your value prop through a benefit statement, e.g., "We are a single platform, multi-channel..." becomes "Chat with anyone, anywhere, all in one app." Knowing your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) is crucial to positioning your benefit statement; what problem does your product solve [for my ICP(s)]? Want to go deeper? I thought you'd never ask. In what situation is your customer in to seek out a better solution–your solution? These are called situational segments. In my experience, understanding and using situational segments to drive product decisions is the best approach to acquiring and retaining customers. Nail down these before the value proposition.

A clear value proposition is crucial for a successful product launch. It's a concise statement that outlines what your product does, its target audience, and its unique advantage over competitors. This core message communicates the specific problem your product addresses, the market that needs this solution, and the distinct benefit your product provides. Having a clear value proposition indicates you've effectively identified and articulated the key aspects of your product, laying a strong foundation for introducing it to the market. This clarity is essential for attracting potential customers and differentiating your product in a competitive landscape.

As a Product Manager, ensuring a clear value proposition is paramount. This involves articulating what the product does, who it's for, and its unique benefits compared to alternatives. Finding a Product-Market Fit is like finding the perfect match between what your product offers and what customers want. Throughout development, iterate your product based on user feedback & market insights. Gauge the success of PMF through customer satisfaction, retention, & positive feedback. Once you get that, it's time to go!

Product-market fit is the vital harmony between your product and the needs and desires of your target audience. It's not just a milestone; it's the North Star guiding your entire product development journey. Achieving product-market fit is akin to unlocking the gateway to a successful product launch. To ascertain this fit, you embark on a journey of understanding – seeking insights from real or potential customers and gauging their responses to your offering.

Validating product-market fit is difficult. In my experience, the best (and fastest) way to validate product-market fit is: 1. Build an ROI First? MVP 2. Measure and gain insights through data: platform, behavioural and customer feedback analytics 3. Refine your Ideal Customer Profiles (ICPs) 4. Iterate your product [based on data] 5. Understand why customers do or do not refer your product That last can be scary but incredibly insightful. Want to know the hard truth about your product? Ask your customers: 1. How many friends/colleagues would benefit from our product? 2. How many have you referred? 3. What is holding you back from referring them all? Address those issues to unlock new customers and a more fine-tuned product-market fit.

Are they excited about your product? Expectations align with what the product offers? Use landing pages / prototypes and monitor how users engage with them. Dive into analytics. User retention, conversion rates, time spent using your product. High engagement typically signals a strong product-market fit. Are customers providing positive testimonials?Iterate and adapt based on feedback, validation is not a one-time checkpoint. If you've ticked these boxes, it's a strong indicator that your product is resonating with your target audience ??

Simplifying features to get a product out the door faster can sometimes result in a product that is too simple to be interesting or useful, failing to engage users or provide useful information. You need to make sure that your MVP solves a core problem well enough to get early users interested, even if it's very simple. Also, opinions from a small group of beta testers might not always be representative of the people you want to reach. Different experiences with users help you fully understand something, so while MVPs are meant to help you learn quickly, they should also help you learn correctly.

User interface (UI) and user experience (UX) are critical elements that dictate how customers interact with your product and their overall impression of it. These aspects encompass layout, color, typography, navigation, animation, feedback, and accessibility. Refining UI and UX involves adhering to design best practices and principles, focusing on usability, aesthetics, and performance. Tools like wireframes, mockups, and prototypes are instrumental in creating and iterating these elements. By refining UI and UX, you enhance the appeal and quality of your product, significantly impacting user satisfaction and engagement. This refinement is crucial in ensuring that the product not only meets but exceeds user expectations.

The UI and UX aren't just design elements; they are the storytellers shaping how users interact with and feel about a product. Beyond layout, color and typography, they encompass the intricate dance of navigation, animation, and accessibility. Following design best practices is the first step, optimizing for usability, aesthetics, and performance. UI and UX are important, but if you stick to design rules to the letter, you might end up with a product that looks good but doesn't really connect with users. It's not enough to use design tools or follow best practices; you also need to know the specific needs and customs of your users, especially in emerging markets with a lot of different kinds of people. UI/UX that is well-done should not just look good; it should also be easy to use and include everyone, so that it fits with users' morals and daily lives. In other words, the best UI/UX isn't just one that looks good; it's one that feels like it was made just for the people who use it.

Wireframes and non-functional prototypes are an excellent way to rapidly move your product forward. Wireframes are not lo-fi designs or laying out a page with your design system elements. Think pencil to paper–boxes, circles and lines. In my experience, getting ideas from your head onto paper is the fastest way to iterate. The speed at which you can solve UX problems with this approach will surprise your team (and yourself). From there, take it into a wireframing application that allows you to touch and feel the experience. Or, for more technical problem-solving, consider a non-functional prototype. Think HTML & CSS with a sprinkle of faux functionality, e.g. JavaScript saying "Saving..." with a timer to jump to the next page or state.

In my product management journey, I've come to appreciate UI and UX as the gateway to the user's perception and the challenge to exceed their expectations. It's not merely about arranging buttons or choosing colors; it's about taking care the experience which can resonates with users on a deeper level. Usability is paramount, so I spend a lot of time simplifying processes, ensuring that each interaction feels intuitive and delightful.Collaborating with usability experts has been invaluable. Their insights and methodologies contribute significantly to creating designs that not only look good but, more importantly, feel right for the user.

Preparing a launch strategy and marketing plan is crucial for a product's introduction and promotion. These plans encompass positioning, pricing, distribution, branding, messaging, channels, campaigns, and goals. To develop these, conduct thorough market, competitor, and customer research. Define your value proposition, unique selling proposition, and competitive advantage. Utilize tools like SWOT analysis and customer personas to inform your strategy. A well-crafted launch strategy and marketing plan provide a clear vision and direction, ensuring your product's launch is targeted, effective, and aligns with broader business objectives. This preparation is key to making an impactful entry into the market and achieving long-term success.

A launch strategy and marketing plan are the architects behind a successful foray into the market. More than mere steps and actions, they represent a meticulously crafted blueprint, guiding the product's journey from inception to the hands of the target audience. Important note: Your first launch strategy will not be perfect; you have to learn from those mistakes for the next one.

Everyone's "launch strategy" should be: get it into the market today and manage expectations. What do I mean by "manage expectations?" Glad you asked! Tell them about the known issues, how much you'd appreciate their feedback, and how much you value them being part of this journey with you. When they *do* give you that feedback, respect and honour it. Listen and understand their pain point, and enhance your product. Once you launch that new feature that solved their problem, give them shine for it. That's the recipe for a) lifelong customers, and b) product advocates who tell their friends: "I told them there was an issue with X, and they fixed it. I'm basically their CPO..." Jokes aside, that approach makes them feel part of the journey.

As a Product Manager, I view this phase not just as a static plan but as a living, breathing document that evolves with time and user feedback. Every tweak and adjustment should be in harmony with the overarching goals and mission of the product. In this role, I see myself as the guardian of this plan, ensuring that every modification aligns with the product's mission and resonates with the audience.

In the wild ride of bringing a product to life, think of your post-launch plan and feedback loop as the trusty sidekicks that keep the adventure going. They're not just boring processes; they're your way of saying, 'Hey, we're here for the long haul!' It's not about perfection; it's about an ongoing journey of tweaks and improvements. You know all those little things like answering support questions, sending out updates, and fixing bugs? Yeah, those are the everyday heroes in your post-launch world. But it's not just about fixing stuff; it's about turning customer reviews, ratings, and testimonials into gold stars that guide others on their journey.

Analytics are great for validating decisions. However, when people hear "analytics," they immediately think of 'numbers in tabular format.' That's a good start, but you're missing the bigger picture. Your product should include these on day one: 1. Platform Analytics, e.g., Google Analytics. 2. Behavioural Analytics, e.g., Mouseflow. 3. Customer Feedback Analytics, e.g., direct conversations with users. Your starting point should be the data. What could be the problem? The data can point you in a direction, e.g. a drop-off point. Next, how are users interacting with your product, e.g. why are they dropping off at that point? Finally, talk to those customers. "What happened at that point that made you do X (opposite of the indent goal)?"

Having a post-launch plan and a feedback loop is crucial for continuous improvement. This encompasses support, maintenance, updates, and collecting customer feedback. Establishing key performance indicators and metrics for post-launch review ensures sustained product success and growth.

This article assumes that you should do a big-bang product launch after a long period of research and development. This is a bad idea because we are always mostly wrong about what customers want, what they will pay for, what message they will respond to, and the best way to reach them. Instead of doing a big-bang product launch, we should do product research, development and marketing continuously, iteratively and incrementally, starting small, experimenting with marketing and building up over time as we learn what works. Steve Blank and Eric Reiss talk about this a lot in their books.

Talk to your customers, and don't settle for surface-level answers. If you dig, you may find gold. Ask good, direct, and open-ended questions, e.g. "How come you stopped at that point?" Don't ask them "yes" or "no" questions. Then, listen to their feedback and ask follow-up questions, e.g. "What made you 'afraid' to enter your credit card information?" Dig deeper if you get simple answers: "I hear you, and how come..." Getting to the root of the pain point may take a few follow-up questions, so be patient. Finally, confirm that if their pain point was fixed, they would have completed X goal, e.g. purchased your product. And once you have updated your product, voila! You have another satisfied (and potentially paying) customer.

In the exhilarating journey of product development, we often find ourselves immersed in a sea of tools and frameworks, each promising innovation and efficiency. Yet, amidst the allure of these technological marvels, let's remember this: there's no substitute for experience. Tools may sound fancy, frameworks may dazzle, but it's the grit, the failures, and the triumphs that shape true expertise. In the realm of building something extraordinary, every setback is a lesson, every success a testament to resilience. While tools provide a roadmap, it's the seasoned navigator who can truly navigate the twists and turns of development. Embrace the tools, absorb the frameworks, but let your experience be the guiding star.

The clearest sign that you're ready to launch a product is when, following the prototype and pilot series, new orders are requested not only by initial customers but also by others who have heard about the product and are eager to make purchases. This indicates that the message has been effectively communicated to the pilot series customers and that you have delivered on your promises. Positive word-of-mouth from these early adopters is a strong indicator of success. Of course, preparations for the launch, such as scaling up production, are essential. However, in my view, customer response is the most crucial indicator of a product's potential for success. It's a sign that the product can generate profit right from the start.
