I definitely have benefited from being mentored. I feel like mentors I have built a relationship within the past has increased my sense of self because they valued me as a human being who just needed some support, guidance, and advice to reach my full potential. Sometimes negative self-talk can get in the way, but having a mentor who is a positive voice in your corner can really go a long way in terms of emotional support. I know it is hard for people to ask for help, but once you get over whatever is holding you back then you can really enjoy the benefits. Be open to non-traditional mentoring as well. You may find mentorship in all kinds of places such as on social media or on podcasts. For example, there are various podcasts in the field of Social Work that are published on a regular basis. You can take this opportunity to learn from someone experienced in the field. This can happen on your own time. Once you find someone you relate too then you can inquire about mentorships and coaching programs. A good podcast to start with is the Social Worker's Rise! podcast that explores various careers in Social Work and gives you tools you can use today in your work or schooling.

When I left Texas to Oregon for university, I got to meet a whole lot more people and really value those mentors that I got to meet along the way. They have shaped who I am today. Formally and informally, I actively nurture my mentor relationships, whether stumbled upon or intentionally sought out for their skills. Expressing gratitude is paramount to me, and I reciprocate their generosity whenever possible. It could be as simple as sharing a coffee and a chat or taking a walk for a deep conversation. Regardless of the form it takes, maintaining these relationships is my way of honoring the invaluable guidance that has shaped my journey and brought me to where I am today.
