I am motivated by impact. This is definitely something I look for in an NGO. Impact that can be felt and measured by what is on ground, not what is on paper or its website. Transparency and accountability should be in the NGO`s DNA.

The work of the NGO should be something that resinates with you emotionally and mentally, because this is about giving of your time above all. Once you have that ingredient, everything will fall into place.

What are the skills and the qualifications required for the position? What are the time commitment and the schedule of the volunteering? In my experience, an organization that can clearly articulate its expectations AND follows through has a more engaged board. Too often boards are led by altruistic feelings that can get lost in disillusionment. Understand the difference between a working board and an advisory board. A working board will require more time while an advisory board has limited day to day involvement.
