Sales management is not for everyone, so make sure you have the right skills and mindset for the role.
To successfully transition to sales management, it is essential to have a deep understanding of the selling process and possess exceptional communication abilities. Building and leading successful teams also require several skills. To prepare yourself for this role; acquaint yourself with the products or services your team will be working on, cultivate strategic thinking in reaching targets while sharpening coaching/motivational expertise needed towards guiding your sales group?effectively.
Sales management is what I call a pass-through profession. When you become a sales manager, it's no longer about you, it's about your team. You become successful when you help them become more successful. And they become successful by helping their prospects and customers become more successful. There are many other things required to become successful in sales management, but if you remember this pass-through principle, it keeps you grounded. Become a student of coaching and work toward sales coaching mastery. Learn to connect the dots between reporting/analytics and how they indicate where your team members need help to improve. Then, discuss and observe activities and methodology (activity quality) and train/coach to close gaps.
Don't accept a position in sales management because you're good at selling. In fact if you're great at selling, you probably WON'T make a good sales manager. Why? Because if you're great at selling, you can make things happen - you can make appointments, get in front of prospects, deliver presentations and close sales. Not only that, you can probably make some of that happen pretty quick. Sales management isn't like that. Sales management is trying to make those things happen through other people, people who probably won't be great at selling, so they'll find it tough. As a result it will take them time, much more time than you. So you may well find that as a sales manager you'd spend most of your time tearing your hair out in frustration.
I did an MBA to answer that question and had my answer only after I got my hands dirty. First, Sales and Sales Management are not too different. If you can continually motivate yourself to meet your clients and solve for them, you can also meet your sales teams and solve for them. If you can't sell, you should learn that first to lead by example. Second, people skills, primarily - understanding the motivations and aspirations of your team go a long long way. Remember every finger is different but all are more useful together. Third, get your KPIs right. Make sure that the evaluation is done based on market factors including - Geography, Industry, Brand positioning etc. Use a holistic framework to incentivize teams not just $ value.
While it may look like sales is about convincing the other person to buy something, it is much more than that A good salesperson understands the pain points of the prospective customer, customizes the pitch to highlight relevant benefits and communicates effectively at the right moment A good salesperson should also be good at managing the data and drawing actionable insights to deliver the goals
Sales management is not easy, and it comes with many challenges. You have to balance the needs and expectations of your team, your customers, your boss, and your company. You have to deal with performance issues, turnover, competition, and changing market conditions. You have to manage your time, budget, and resources effectively, and deliver results consistently. You have to deal with the pressure and accountability of being a sales leader, and the isolation and loneliness of being away from the frontline. Sales management is not glamorous, and it can be stressful and demanding.
Transitioning into Sales Management came with its challenges. Balancing between individual sales targets and managing a team required a shift in mindset. I had to learn to delegate tasks, handle conflicts, and navigate the pressure of meeting team goals while ensuring individual growth. Adapting to administrative tasks, such as reporting and performance reviews, also presented a learning curve.

Furthermore customers are well educated and their demands are rising with emerging personal requirements as they look for ?? customer satisfaction, failing which they will critizis and put your sales management to "0". Maintaining healthy CRM , offering value for money are key areas.
"The overall success or failure will be laid upon your shoulders". A sales manager is often times like a single parent, with 30-50 children! You will be expected to support, teach, coach, train, and drive the success of every single sales person. Even if you are blessed to have assistant sales managers, ultimately the responsibility will rest on your shoulders. As you will also be required to teach, coach, train, and hold accountable your ASM's. Also, in many businesses, let go of your desire to have a worklife balance lol. Just as sales associates are required to be there for the business when the customers want to buy... the sales manager has even more responsibility when it comes to personal schedule. Chose Wisely.
An additional question you should be aware is a fair evaluation of yourself whether you are rather a hunter type person or an expert? For both personalities you'll find roles in sales the maturity of the company products or the market competitive situation (or other reasons) drive the need of either. So be aware of yourself and the company to set up for success

Sales aint an easy profession & having a good Sales Manager is the difference between success, or failure. As I’ve said in a previous post the best sales people and sales managers are those most organised, or, best prepared. There is a misconception about sales being a shady career full of blaggers and charlatans but this couldn’t be further from the truth previously; in its truest, purest, and best form is closest aligned to a Lawyer. The brief; understand who you’re ideal customer is (I.e build a case file) test this by going to market and asking intelligent questions, documenting the answers and changing course until you find the truth. To do this well, it takes a lot of preparation to teach and coach it to others takes even more. It takes 10,000 hours to be an expert at anything, after all ;)
Sales management is not a linear progression from salesperson, it's a radical shift in role and responsibility. You need to make a transition from being a doer to being a leader, from being an individual to being a team player, from being focused on yourself to being focused on others. You need to make a transition from selling products or services to selling ideas and vision, from managing your own pipeline to managing your team's pipeline, from closing deals to closing gaps. You need to make a transition from being a salesperson to being a sales manager.
With the benefit of having led multiple teams in multiple markets in the medical field... Find a balance, its not a carrot and stick, don't be a micromanager, learn about about what is important to your team, what makes them tick. You are not to be their best friend, you are there to help them succeed, to help them reach THEIR goals. Learn to create a positive environment, have fun, but have accountability - set clear expectations that are reasonable and show that you are in it with them, bc you are. Lastly, people will work for and with you bc they trust you, treat your team like they are your customer, hold yourself accountable to their success, bc the teams success is your success. You need to seek support from your network, who can connect you with opportunities, referrals, and recommendations, and expand your horizons and perspectives.
Good organizations have management or leadership training and often you can request this before you’re in a management role. This will also show the leadership team that you are serious about your next step. Learn as much as you can before you get in the role but continue to learn while you’re a manager. Even in small organizations you can find someone who has a similar job to you, and those people are typically willing to help or give advice. You are in charge of your career, growth and development – don’t be afraid to ask for support.
Don’t overestimate your internal leaders’ knowledge & skill. Understand the strengths and limitations of each individual in your network. Learn who to go to for what. Stack resources so you have 2-3 strong mentors in certain areas, for instance; Person A & D - personnel issues / responses. Person B & A - Program building. Person C & D - Sales specific coaching. Get an outside mentor & build a network of leaders in other orgs so you have people to bat ideas back and forth with. Having folks outside of the org allows you to talk freely about your challenges / wins, gain perspective on how other orgs are structured and have systems built, and they are not nearly as bias since they aren’t “living” your current goals, challenges, etc.
