Stage management is a job that requires different roles and responsibilities depending on the size and scope of the production, the stage of the process, and the expectations of the director and producer. Pre-production tasks may include hiring and contracting the crew, securing the venue and equipment, creating and distributing the script and production book, and attending design and production meetings. During rehearsals, you may be responsible for setting up the rehearsal space, marking blocking and movements, calling cues and transitions, taking notes, and updating the script and production book. Technical rehearsals involve coordinating technical elements like lighting, sound, set, props with artistic elements like actors, director, and designers. During performance you take on the role of main authority and contact person for the production by opening/closing house, calling show, managing backstage/front of house, dealing with issues or emergencies, and reporting results/feedback. Depending on size/complexity of production you may have one or more assistant/deputy stage managers to help with tasks/duties.
