Goals and interest fulfills passion. You are supposed to consider your passion. I have realised that to some extent social workers sacrifice a lot. Imagine putting yourself into other people's shoes throughout your profession, how does it feel? What can happen if you are not passionate about it?....

Your career goals and interests are essential when choosing a social work program, but it’s important to research the diverse areas of social work practice. Many students are only aware of clinical or direct practice, but micro, mezzo, and macro social work make up the career opportunities available. Talk to social workers from different industries about their jobs to give you additional ideas. Once you enroll in a program be open to new inspiration and knowledge.

When choosing a social work graduate program the first thing one should consider is your area of interest , the next thing that should be look at is completion time . Can you do full time program or part time. Look at the financial costs and if there are scholarships that would help reduce cost. Location is important for travel reasons if you don’t drive. Visit schools and ask for the curriculum to see if it fits your needs. Last but not least remember self care on your journey and know that this is not a race but a rewarding experience that will change your life and others. Set goals that are attainable and will help you stay on track.

When I see values/ ethics as a consideration in choosing a social work program, the first thing that comes to mind is whether the social work program is in a Christian institution. Unfortunately, there are social work departments housed in religious institutions in which the social work faculty don't always abide by the NASW Code of Ethics. This is problematic. There are issues in non-religious institutions, too -- do your homework. The NASW Code of Ethics needs to be a priority in ALL of your work as a social worker, period. This begins with your social work education.

It's important to choose a program that not only teaches these foundational ethics but also aligns with your personal values. This alignment will inspire you and enhance your learning experience.

Consider your finances carefully. While I love being a social worker, building a substantial income takes years. When hiring, the school attended is a small factor. If you can afford a high-tuition school that aligns with your goals, go for it! But a $200k loan for prestige may not boost your salary. If you owe $1k+ monthly with a $60k starting salary, resentment may follow. Invest in work experience and internships; they open doors faster than a high-tuition school.

Find scholarships and apply for them. Try to avoid loans. The prestige of the program doesn’t matter as much as you think it does. Make sure they cover macro well. Check out the faculty pages and identify a few folks you’d enjoy working with.

What kind of funding do they offer to Masters students? Many programs will offer a limited number of funded field programs, which may or may not have 2-3 year employment requirement post-graduation. These can be a great way to get a head start in your professional career, as it gives you guaranteed or preferential consideration when getting your first job after grad school. Even if the funded field program is not exactly the type of work you want to do long-term, is will help you build transferrable skills that you can use anywhere.

Carefully consider where you want to live and work once you have earned your degree and choose a university in that general area. Why? During your Social Work program you will make connections with other students, professors, and agencies local to the university. These connections are a tremendous benefit to you once you are ready to look for jobs. They already know you and your work ethic so they are more likely to hire you compared to someone who doesn’t know you yet. However, if you chose a university outside of the area you will be working in then you do not have the same opportunities to build those local connections. It won’t be impossible to get a job after graduation but it will likely be more challenging. Your network matters.

It will be helpful if you know what hat you want to do with your degree. Are you more large systems or therapy interested. Find out what schools excel in those areas. Find out about the faculty and make sure they assist or assign great intern placements. They need to provide that for you. Keep in mind if you are going for therapy, you’ll need to be supervised for 2 years to obtain a license. Also. seek out your own personal therapy so to upgrade your own mental health.

I think this is more significant than we realize. I ended up staying in the same state that I went to graduate school for. I always tell any students now to make sure that you go to school in a place that you may not mind living.

Location and lifestyle is a big factor in choosing the program that is right for you. The program will be a lot of reading, writing, and studying. However, in your off time you'll want to spend time doing things you enjoy doing. You want to make sure some of your hobby activities are local to the town your program is in.

This is a must for all social workers otherwise you cannot be a social worker.... Most degrees for social work clearly state whether they are accredited or not. This accreditation also needs to be maintained post graduation as well! This means you must fulfill a criteria outlined by the accredator annually to maintain your registry and keep your accreditation. Also, you must work according to the standards outlined by the accredator otherwise they may investigate the removal of your accreditation.

When we talk about accreditation, not only does the institution need to be accredited by the regional body of learning, but the program itself needs to be accredited by the CSWE, or Council in Social Work Education. Without the appropriate accreditations, your masters degree won’t take you far. For example, ALL state licensing boards require the MSW to be from an accredited institution in order to become clinically licensed. Employers using the social work title are requiring transcripts to verify program accreditation due to title protection. Many doctoral level SW programs are requiring the MSW from an accredited institution. Long story short, accreditation is important to ensure quality education but also for post-grad use of the degree.

Find what makes sense for YOU and your goals. If you are really interested in macro social work - does the program provide options? Do you want to have a say in your practicum options or do you prefer your program to decide? If you really value networking ask about what opportunities they provide to this. If possible read into bios or have meetings with some of their professors to see if their teaching style fits with you.

None of these. It's faculty and culture for me. Not everyone who joins the social work program may necessarily have an aptitude for it (especially at the undergrad level) but if the faculty embodies the values of social work, they will be able to generate passionate social workers. The same goes for culture of the institution. If the institution models what they preach & walk the talk (in the form of diverse curriculum, compassionate teachers, socio-emotional support structures, positive climate), that's a huge plus. :)

While choosing the social work or other subject one should have some knowledge what the subject is about. Then he should be motivated yes I am choosing the right subject. Some youth have dream in many fields they should check whether their dream includes strengthening social fabric, working with unknown individuals and communities with dirty locations and low income profile. Then observe what NGOs are doing practically at grass root level and then talk to the social workers. If a student feels it perfect then only he should proceed for admission. In many cases students choosing social work subject and later on work in banks, commercial institutions, corporate sector etc and give up principles of social work, do not accept all and not hear

A Field Work Placement is an internship where the actual patient interaction occurs. Social Policy, Community Organizations, and Advocacy are not designed to equip the student to diagnose and treat mental and nervous disorders.

You should consider your learning style and lifestyle needs when deciding your MSW program. There are online, hybrid, and in person programs. Online programs can offer you the flexible to complete your MSW from home and work around parenting, care taking, or work needs. However, this requires digital literacy skills, digital access, self motivation and self discipline. There are also in person programs for those who want a learning experience that is more interactive. Especially for social work that is a human services field, you can optimize your learning through in person experiences. However on the down side it may not be as flexible as online programs. Overall, it is important to invest and choose the option that is right for you.

The main thing to consider is can you see yourself doing this type of work for the rest of your life? Do you understand the populations you’ll likely be working with? A lot of the time you’re going to be working with vulnerable people who have been oppressed. People that live in impoverished communities, people who have done harm to children, people who struggle with mental health and addiction. Sometimes you’ll be the only person they have and most of the time you’re not going to be able to solve their problems. Remember there is a difference between helping and saving. You’re not going to be able SAVE people. You’ll see all the red flags and all you can do is provide support. Can you do that?
