That requires a purposeful strategy and mission objective over a timeframe of 3-5 years or longer, depending on the scale of the strategy. To determine the strategic purpose, the leader and their team must assess the changing externaal environment over various time horizons, as well as assessing competition today and in the future. With that anlysis, you can do a full SWOT analysis of your strengths and weaknesses, as well as opportunities and threats. Based on that analysis, you can select the optimal strategy to create optimal value and meet the expectations of all stakeholders, especially customers.

To me the role of a leader in creating a successful business strategy is akin to that of a ship’s captain Without the captain having a clear vision of where the ship should reach and what path it should follow it’s bound to go haywire. Similarly a leader must have a clear understanding of the company vision and chalk out the path to treat in order to achieve those goals Take decisions based on data and insights , allocating resources to achieve strategic objectives and tweaking the strategy in response to changing circumstances would be some the roles a leader would play Just as a ship’s captain ensures a successful voyage a leader plays a pivotal role in crafting and executing a successful business strategy.

Creating a business strategy requires following: 1. Vision Setting: a clear vision, guiding strategic decisions to motivate team, align efforts and foster trust. 2. Strategic Planning: to set SMART goals and formulate strategies leveraging strengths. 3. Resource Allocation: Leaders allocate resources to prioritizing initiatives, 4. Risk Management: identify risks and develop strategies to mitigate while capitalizing on opportunities. 5. Culture Building: foster a culture supporting innovation, collaboration, and accountability. 6. Stakeholder Engagement: engage stakeholders to gather insights and ensure alignment with vision. 7. Performance Monitoring: establish metrics to monitor & achieve strategic objectives.

An example I have seen is that in organisations where leaders have not recognised their role to set or define the purpose, strategic plans have failed. The lack of purpose reduce strategic plans to operational plans that are achieving objectives in silos. The end result is having departments or units that have achieved individual targets and a company that has not achieved its objectives. Purpose allows for growth and the lack of it creates an environment that is stagnant but with overworked staff and unmet objectives.

He/she needs to efficiently communicate why the strategy is the course which has been decided, based not on hunches but rationale, data and logic. He/she also needs to develope practices and reporting mechanisms which drive the behavior which tactically aligns to the overall strategy. Unless the leader does not align the people, the processes and the practices in a way where each step works towards fulfiment of strategy, there will always be friction and silos.

Honesty is key here. You and your team must develop the ability to look at your organization with detachment and assess strengths and weaknesses honestly. After defining the purpose and assessing the situation you should have a clear idea of 2 things, the market, I.e. what markets you need to be in and which you need to be out of and from that, how your product or service needs to change to meet the needs of the new market. What will the market need from your product or service in 3 years or 5 years time? How does your product or service look now and how different is it from what it needs to be?Will you be looking to provide the best possible product or service, the lowest possible price or a more niche solution for specific industries. Then it’s about tightly defining that new target market, focusing on their future needs and evolving how you operate now to how you will need to operate.

Here is how you can set SMART objectives for any context: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Setting objectives using the SMART criteria can guide your efforts, focus your resources, and increase the chances of achieving your goals, regardless of the context.

A strategy looks great on paper till you execute it. Set three timelines for objectives, yearly, quarterly and monthly. Review your achievements and if you are not able to achieve your monthly objective, you will at no chance achieve your quarterly and you will throw the yearly one out of the window. This is how you enact your strategies.

A strategy is usually a long-term plan that requires coordination and alignment from all areas of the business. Therefore, the objectives of the strategy need to be clear. Each area's role is clearly defined and will full buy-in to the overall strategy.

Too often, strategies fail not at the planning stage but at implementation. Choosing the right actions isn't just a step; it's the leap that counts. Leader has to ensure that organization is aligned and all actions are as per strategy. This is easier said than done as various factors play there role. This takes us back to school where for any event, we used to have multiple Heads to coordinate and overlook at the tasks. Think of this and it can work wonders for you. Identify a team, and a team lead to oversee the project. Not just department heads, but take your all team members as a single team and assign multiple task leaders within. This can be for a small team as well as a large corporation.

The best strategies begin with engaging the people. Leaders who can observe, listen, and feel tuned to the pulse of their organization will be better armed to assess the strengths and struggles of the current strategy. From there, adjustments for what tweaks and pivots from that strategy can be made or whether an entirely new direction is required. A strategy made in a vacuum is not a strategy that will win or prevail.

From my perspective in building multiple companies and teams, as the owner, leader etc being willing to do everything from cleaning the floors to wiping tables, alongside the team sets the tone for success. If the business is a good idea it is both made and lost depending on how well the team feels they add value. And while it’s not just the employees or team, clearly the clients need to see and feel the same thing, otherwise there is no revenue or value to keep up momentum. You also need to manage expectations about the strengths and weaknesses of your team and those of your clients. They shouldn’t be the best of the best, flaws add value. But honesty and ethics need to take top precedence with both the team and clients.

Strenght and Weakness are internal and can be in your control but Opportunities and Threats are also to be considered which most of the small businesses ignore. Over an above a proper monitoring of achievements and processes is required to have control over the execution of the plan. A strong team development and great task leaders will solve most of your problems.

A strategy without a leader driving it is like a Ship sailing in waters without a compass ! Without a leader , a strategy can lack the decisive force and coordinated effort necessary, leaving the organization adrift like a ship without a compass in uncertain waters.
