What is the role of graphical models in reinforcement learning?

In Reinforcement Learning, a graphical model like a Markov decision process (MDP) visually represents the agent's interaction with the environment, capturing actions, observations, and rewards. It serves to illustrate dynamic interactions, handle uncertainties, model the learning process, and structurally frame RL problems. This visual framework aids in understanding and solving complex RL challenges.

Abstraction is essential to RL. Temporal abstraction involves organizing actions and observations over time into higher-level structures or patterns. RL Agents can explore environments more efficiently by learning and reusing sequences of actions or activities, which are learned as higher-level concepts. Spatial abstraction involves reducing the complexity of the state space by capturing regularities or patterns within it. It also decreases the memory or computational resources required for learning and decision-making.
