What role does grammar play in effective writing instruction?

Too many students already think that grammar makes or breaks a writer, when this is not true at all. Grammar can be a distraction for readers, whether it is standard or not. It is important to help students understand that grammar is a series of patterns influenced by numerous factors, some conventional, some contextual, and many fluid. Progress toward clarity and fewest distractions should be a goal, but even those perceptions can be subjective. Model language expectations, point toward appropriate support systems, and prioritize students' confidence in their ability to think deeply and analytically about content first.

In simple words, Grammar plays a very Vital role in each and every language. We can see its importance in below points : 1- Sentence Formation : In any language, it's or will not be possible to form a sentence to speak without Grammar, somebody taught us or not but most of the time all of us use grammar in our speaking and writing. 2. Perfect communication : No one can deny that It's grammar who has made several Editors, writers a renowned personality, through their way of communication, whether it's in written format or in public speaking.

Simple! Good grammar helps writers sell their works to readers. It is easy to read and understand. Good grammar builds verbal and written communication skills of readers.

Proper grammar also enhances the overall professionalism and credibility of a written piece. One of the most common ways of teaching grammar rules in my home country (Iran) is devising formulas. Take subject + past form of a verb + object as an obvious example, making language learners to memorize the formula to just accurately make some past tense sentences without understanding the usage of the past simple tense. As a result, there are many students who can write sentences using complex grammar rules accurately, but they use the grammar rules in an awkward way (in the wrong place).This is why teachers not only must teach grammar rules to their students accurately, but also have to teach them when and where use the rules while writing a passage to seem natural.
