To paraphrase a scene from the movie Jurassic Park…. ‘They were so focused on whether they could… They didn’t stop to think of whether they should!’. Some 20yrs ago when I started my career in tech and operations, I often fell into the trap of ‘innovation’ and ‘transformation projects’. All were backed by data. All justified and supported. But that’s the thing with data and story. You can make them apply to and support just about anything. With 20yrs of hindsight, many of those projects didn’t need to happen. Didn’t actually help. And in some cases, did more harm or added more distraction into the teams. These days, I focus much more intently on the human impact of change. More than anything else. Change needs to support and empower.
