1 What is video compression?

2 How do H.264 and H.265 work?

H.264 and H.265 are two of the most popular video compression standards, also known as codecs. A codec is a software or hardware that encodes and decodes video files. H.264 was introduced in 2003 and is widely used for HD video streaming and recording. H.265, also known as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), was released in 2013 and is designed to improve the compression efficiency and quality of H.264.

Both H.264 and H.265 use a similar method of compression, called block-based motion compensation. This means that they divide the video frames into small blocks, and compare them with previous and future frames to find similarities and differences. If the hardware and software are all H.265 compliant, then it can be an option, this includes ensuring that this format will be working with other systems that might be employed. A practical use use could be a wide overview scene, where a busy boomed entry constitutes only a quarter of the view.

While building solution on AWS cloud for video or image recognition keep in mind that some services doesn't support H.265 codec IP cameras. It's better to use H.264 coded IP camera for that purpose. You can do decoding and encoding for codec from H.265 to H.264 but that might not help always.
