I've never experienced it, but believe profits shared by organisations under pressure (extreme competitor, turnaround etc) can be highly effective for a short period around the achievement of key goals... and profit.

Recognition bonuses or awards are an effective tool to drive a recognition based culture, and to add to that it can even be non monetary recognition and it can drive more positive impact on ground. in regards to monetary recognition the most important point in my experience is to govern it well enough to remove bias and subjectivity from the line manager while giving them the autonomy to recognize their teams at the same time, it's this balance that needs to be maintained. this can be done by setting clear criteria for the recognition and regular sanity checks to ensure no abuse is taking place.

Can often be the norm but are fraught with difficulties especially where last years bonus amount becomes the minim for this years payout and target setting is difficult or poorly done. Managers like to have the power to differentiate but it can lead to discrimination and a culture where employees are afraid to challenge or compete to demonstrate their commitment to the cause!
i usually do not prefer this type of bonuses as it lacks structure and proper scheming, yet it can be useful in retention cases. therefore i'm pro using it with very high regulation up to CEO approval.
Never differentiate in payout between two people doing the same job to the same standard unless there is a very strong reason to do so. Even a small difference can demotivate one and embarrass the other - and don’t be surprised when they talk, because they will, and then any remedial action will be demotivating too. Keep the ￡￡￡ the same unless there’s a very good reason not to!
