It is much better than focus groups or surveys because people vote with their wallets. First Build is the innovation arm of GE Appliances. A couple of people were “Sonic Ice” enthusiasts. And the commercially available nugget ice machines were just too expensive. Would there be a big enough audience to create and sell a desktop nugget ice machine? Turns out there is. You can now buy the Opal ice machine on Amazon.

Over the last several years I have supported over 50 different crowdfunding projects. I have seen the good and the bad. Remarkable few projects were outright scams where I lost my money. Most eventually delivered the promised product. Manufacturing delays are common. It is hard to know where the problems will come up, especially dealing with suppliers outside of the US.
