What problem solving skills do you need to get promoted?

As structured here, the first step of problem solving is problem identification. A problem can be defined as a gap between the expected result and the current progress. Therefore, the very first step of problem solving is to set (or confirm) the expected result of the organization, which could be mission, vision or more short term KPIs. If you want to get promoted to senior management position, you are expected to visualize the team vision with higher and broader perspectives and communication it so your team members can identify the gap (=problem) by themselves and actively propose the solution. This way, showing “the North Pole” of the team generates proactive problem solvers in your team and elevate your contribution.

One thing I've found helpful in acquiring problem-solving skills for promotion is honing critical thinking abilities. Developing a knack for dissecting complex issues and identifying core problems is crucial. Additionally, effective communication skills aid in articulating solutions and gaining buy-in from stakeholders. Lastly, showcasing adaptability by embracing innovative approaches to problem-solving demonstrates readiness for higher roles.

Recognize and define the issue clearly. Clearly understanding the problem is the first step towards effective problem-solving.

Explore various solutions or approaches to address the problem. Creativity in generating alternatives demonstrates adaptability and critical thinking.

This is fundamental. As I learned in Harvard Business School, reflective leadership requires you to analyze the problem using different lenses, before acting on it. Most of the time, grey area problems will not have perfect solutions in terms of impact, but looking closely and with a reflection mindset will allow leaders and managers to make the best decision possible.

Assess the strengths and weaknesses of each option. Strong analytical skills help in selecting the most viable and effective solution.

Take decisive action to put the chosen solution into practice. Demonstrating initiative and effective implementation is crucial for showcasing problem-solving competence.

Evaluate the results of the implemented solution. Reflecting on outcomes helps in learning from experiences and refining problem-solving strategies for future challenges.

Effectively communicate the process, solution, and outcomes to relevant stakeholders. Clear communication showcases your ability to handle and resolve challenges, contributing to your promotability.
