Being said that, the 5C strategy revolves around a major "C," capturing data. It's crucial to gather the precise data from the appropriate sources at the opportune moment. Data analytics operates akin to a diagnosis: an accurate one solves problems, while an erroneous diagnosis exacerbates them.

Getting your tooling right cannot be emphasized enough. I have heard of stories in my mentorship sessions of how product development basically failed or delayed significantly for reasons traceable to tooling. When selecting a tool, first consider the overarching context of the project. Some projects are just best delivered with MS Projects, others may need a tool like Azure DevOps or Jira; in fact, for some, ServiceNow may be the perfect and perhaps only tool fit for purpose. Have a session with your PMO to understand at the peripheral, the project context or scope, and let the outcome of that inform your choice of tool. At the minimum, just ensure it aids agility, visibility, collaboration, and ease of use.

Efficient testing is critical, with regression testing being notably time-consuming when done manually. To address this, automating regression testing and integrating it into CI/CD pipelines is key. This not only saves QA time but also enhances product quality, instilling greater user trust. Detailed acceptance criteria, ideally in a BDD format, play a crucial role. They provide a shared understanding of feature behavior, guiding developers during implementation and serving as a reference for testers in SIT and UAT. This collaborative approach fosters a common understanding, resulting in features with fewer bugs and higher quality, contributing to overall project success.

One approach I encourage my team to take towards testing is a concept called TDD - Test Driven Development approach. It is a key practice within the XP - Extreme Programming framework. It involves writing tests for your code before actually writing the code. In my experience, I have had to deal with teams who reluctantly give into testing their products thoroughly - for some reasons, they just hate doing it. There are banters on the internet by developers literally cussing QA testers and their close colleagues - the product managers ??. I however have found that a remedy can be to code iteratively through already written test scripts, collecting quick feedback and refactoring on the go. You would have coded and tested all at once.

Automated testing and ci/cd are useful but you can hand crank it if you don’t have it. They save time and make it all standardised but essential is a stretch. I am being a bit of a pedant here on the meaning of essential. And have insisted on automated testing as a Scrum Master.

Definitely a fan of automated testing on the core of the application and critical features. Have wrote the tests before. Be prepared to modify the routines when you make modifications in your estimates.

Just talk to each other. All else is frilly. The basis of communication and collaboration is talking to each other. No matter what fancy tools you have, you need to talk to each other.

Tip: First learn to say as much as possible, using as little words as possible. Then pick the right collaboration tools :) Just my 2cents as a team leader.

I tell my teams - collaboration starts with you, the tools only add the icing on the cake. Collaboration starts with establishing a shared vision, drive, grit, and an environment that is psychologically safe. I invest a healthy amount of my time as a team lead to establish these traits across team members - when there's a shared vision and an environment that encourages ideas and opinions, collaboration becomes imminent. So before you invest all that money for a Slack or MS Teams subscription, or other tangible tools, spend some time getting the intangibles out the way.
