I find the OSI model a great place for troubleshooting. I start at the physical layer and work my way up. This gives me a consistent way to troubleshoot network issues. Once the physical layer is validated, I will validate layer two, ensuring VLANs are tagged on trunk ports, correct VLAN is on the port, etc. Then onto layer three. Is the MAC in the ARP table, is there a route to the destination, etc.
