I sometimes worry that we assess too much and that we place too much emphasis on such assessments and not on what actually counts, which is the process, nor on the outcome, which can only be measured after the students leave the educational environment.

Are we driven by a desire to check a student’s understanding, then modify our approach to teaching based on this feedback, then check again? Are we genuinely curious, open, and committed to what works? This kind of assessment reflects the word’s Greek etymology-to sit beside! If we are driven by competition, ego, and the closed view that students have to meet the education we are offering- then not only is our motivation wrong, but we are positioning ourselves in opposition to the child, not beside them.
