Can you use excel to make a chart? Then you can do 90% of data journalism. You don't need to know how to use a database or create fancy-looking visuals. You just need a hunch, and some data to back it up.

There are plenty of skills a journalist can learn to stay competitive. However, before doing that, they must ensure they have mastered at least one skill. For example, if writing news articles is my forte, I could look to add social media journalism to my arsenal. Given how things are today, social media journalism will always be on the rise. Anyone who understands this and manages to crack it will have a great career in journalism. Weather reporting is another beat many of us can shift our focus on. Even if we might not be experts at it, learning about it can help us and our planet in a big way.

My overall advice is lean into skills you have that perhaps others don't -- but also think about where your interests are. For example, I've always been good at math, and therefore I've naturally gravitated to data-driven stories, even building my own databases at a past job to analyze things like M&A deals, for example. Other journalists might have a special interest in video or design. The more you can find your niche, the richer your reporting will be.
