What are the most successful game design trends of the past decade?

Open-World Games: Massive maps and freedom of choice offer immersion and player agency. Examples: Grand Theft Auto V, The Witcher 3, Breath of the Wild. Battle Royale Games: High-stakes survival and easy-to-learn mechanics make these great for competition and streaming. Examples: Fortnite, PUBG, Apex Legends. Indie Games: Indie devs take creative risks, offering unique experiences that fill niches big studios might miss. Examples: Hades, Stardew Valley, Undertale. Mobile Games: Accessibility and convenience make gaming available to a huge audience. Microtransactions drive revenue. Examples: Candy Crush Saga, Pokémon GO, Genshin Impact.

Open-world games are a design that will never dye! Especially in the story lovers cult of gaming! Hard-core gamers (Candy Crush is not hard-core gaming) will always want this kind of environment, where they can "evade" from the real world and get into Gerald's boots ;)

These games prosper in direct relation to the immersive experience they provide to those of us gamers who love the single-player experience. This speaks to a very specific type of gamer usually who will play these games exclusively and will be very loyal to a series if done well. From my experience, the three most important factors for executing this kind of game well are: 1. Cutting-edge graphics - players for this genre expect the game to look great and have minor to no launch issues 2. Immersive storytelling - the game needs to have an interesting premise and contain captivating characters players can relate to 3. Fun game mechanics - don't have to be innovative or interesting necessarily, just fun enough to repeat throughout the game

Progression is key. The player needs to always feel like they're moving forward, if they're not then you'll lose them fast, especially with the amount of competition out there today.

Open-World games have existed prior to the last decade, but with modern advancements; they're quickly becoming more immersive, detailed, and complex. Let's not forget that classic MMORPG's were open-world and have been around since the late 90's (Everquest being a prime example) Although there are loading points between certain "zones", MMORPG's really launched what we see as open-world titles in modern gaming.

Battle royale games have surged in popularity, captivating millions with their intense, survival-based gameplay. This genre's success lies in its blend of strategy, randomness, and competitive play, making each game session unique and exhilarating. The success of 'Fortnite' and 'PUBG' highlights the genre's ability to engage a broad audience, from casual players to competitive gamers, through accessible, yet deep, gameplay mechanics.

This genre speaks more loudly to younger audiences or those who like their gaming experience to be competitive. These are also social games that can bring small groups together in a nice way, but outside the scope of the small group are usually very toxic.

Not a big fan of these games. However, I acknowledge their rise in trending. 5 years ago, everyone was playing PUBG (and similar games), and the trend is still here. So congratulations on taking over the gaming world!

Indie games hold an excellent promise, and players live them for being the work of what they consider true artists who aren't associated with the more corporate gaming companies. This creates a setting where many faults can be forgiven, and games with lower graphical prowess or a very narrow experience can become super successful and popular. This is also a great place for a game to develop while being played, and the only place early access really has a positive meaning in my opinion.

Indie is still an underdeveloped segment of gaming. It has enormous potential, due to its creativity. However, since games are hard-to-make products, that take a lot of time and money to create, you will never see this trend emerge in the following years. What will happen: investors will give money to indie developers to make their dreams, but condition them to make "a kind" of product that is in trending... so, indie won't be indie anymore soon!

This is the quick-fire world of gaming. Games are made quickly, consumed quickly, and get replaced. You can't deny the success these have at the same time as you cannot ignore the danger it can hold considering the gambling and addictive elements the fast pace brings.

Aaand, SimCity BuildIt brought the complex world of city management into our palms, allowing us to create and manage cities in ways we never imagined on mobile. These examples highlight the diversity and innovation in mobile gaming. Mobile games have opened up new worlds, connected us in fun, interactive ways, and made gaming a part of our daily lives.

It's the segment of gaming that makes the highest profits, has the biggest player based, and it just grows! While, I do not consider mobile gaming as hard-core gaming, since I usually play a game for a week or 2, then uninstall it and forget about it, the ability to cross-platform mobile with pc/console, really helped the player base grow.

These games keep the community engaged and the gameplay fresh, ensuring there's always something new to explore or achieve. It's this ongoing evolution and community focus that's made live service games a dominant trend, offering endless adventures and reasons to stay hooked.

Live service games have redefined the relationship between developers and players, offering evolving content landscapes that keep communities engaged over years. Constantly having new content, and constantly offering players progression is what keeps them coming back. New areas, new items, new levels, new achievements.

Hmm... VR/AR are just in the beginning, and we can't consider them a trend yet. Technology is not accessible to everyone, and playing these games for a long period of time is not possible due to headaches. However, it is the future! In 20 years by now, mobile will go down and this will take its place.

With titles like 'Half-Life: Alyx' and 'Beat Saber', VR gaming has moved from niche experimentation to mainstream interest, offering new ways to interact with digital worlds. UGC (User Generated Content) has been a strong trend during the last decade and is still a force to be reckoned with in my opinion. Thanks to plattforms and communities like Roblox and probably even Unreal’s Fortnite engine, I believe we will continue to see a growing number of ”user generated games” and mods that manage to find new crowds and even innovate existing genres and mechanics. Games that enable their community to co-create will probably see even more success in the future as new tools constantly makes digital creation easier. Today it’s much easier (and faster) to make and publish something that can enable new solo developers and/or small teams to find an audience and start making money and/or gaining traction in the industry.

Iterative design is an overlooked trend that has been hugely successful for many studios. Taking elements, mechanics and assets from previous entries and evolving them into a new title creates continuity within a player base and reduces costs for the team. Whether it's the maps of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise of the fighting mechanics of the Arkham games, building on previous success rather than reinventing the wheel has created some standout titles

As we look to the future, the integration of AI, procedural content generation, and cross-platform play are emerging as key areas of focus. These technologies promise to make games more immersive, personalized, and accessible, further expanding the boundaries of what games can offer. Additionally, the growing importance of community-driven content, modding, and player creativity is set to play a crucial role in game development and engagement.

Souls-like games. Exemplified by the Dark Souls Trilogy, have emerged as one of the most successful game design trends of the past decade. Not only did the trilogy establish a distinct subgenre known as "souls-like," but it also exerted a significant influence on enemy design and combat mechanics in the most of action-adventure and action RPG games.

The Reverse Bullet Hell genre is quickly snowballing through the PC world and finally reaching consoles. This will be a genre to watch (also referred to as Bullet Heaven). Vampire Survivors is a classic example of how a simplistic idea can evolve into something addicting, visually appealing, and affordable for the average gamer.
