A hybrid layout can be very effective in many applications, but it could be costly. The first items/ process to consider before committing to any particular layout would be: - Begin with your deliverable product in mind - Layout your workflow for each part of the process - Rate each part of the process on a scale of 1-5 on the significance/ complexity of that process Work up the equipment cost - list all the equipment at each stage - list the total equipment cost for each stage in your workflow Determine the risk and financial impact on production if you were to loose production. Work up each layout to determine - initial cost - risk (the plant going down) - operating cost - maintenance - ability to test/ improve production

From my point of view there is no ideal design, they are applied depending on the needs of each industry, each model has a strength that can help improve operating times, the ergonomics of operators and facilitate their movements. The key is not to settle on a single model and constantly evaluate new ways to improve current processes.
