Levels, points, and stars are good gamifiers. Try using a "hall of fame" for the top performers. Nothing like a competition to get performance out of employees. There is a reason the arcade games always had the "Top Scores" where you could add your name/initials, many people want to try for Top Dog....it worked then, and it works now.

The term social learning is ambiguous. Whether this ambiguity here is intentional or not, it is important to be mindful of the concepts used in instruction. The term collaboration is well established and known by learners, and there is power in this familiarity. In learning, collaboration is a powerful tool, which games can promote quite naturally. But gamification is not the same as playing non-educational games. Collaboration in learning is more effective when guided, when the rules of interaction are established, when the definition of roles and the assignment of tasks are facilitated, etc. Perhaps, in that way, learning to collaborate is closer to the other meaning of social learning - learning how to work and thrive as a social being.

In my opinion, many of these social interactions through gamified learning only award basics such as logging in, completing courses (regardless if they can show skill development), etc. it truly takes some thought and creativity to award based on the true objectives and demonstration of same.

The one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work in education. I remember one time at work, I was given tasks that were either too easy or too hard, and it was frustrating. I haven’t shared my perspective on an article before so I hope this is helpful, but this section made me want to share about a (part) of a book I just read, “Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. This book explores the theory of the flow state, wherein someone is fully immersed in an activity, energized, focused, and very involved. I can’t think of a better example of that than a gamer who’s locked in. Points, levels, badges, and leaderboards are all incentives that can keep learners pushing and more immersed in the learning process. I can’t lie, I love a badge. It works.

More and more social learning by doing activities in peer groups gives the brain time to repeat the process of recording similar process over and over again. Repetitions have power to regulate information in our brains hence learn, store and recall when required.

Keep in mind that gamification does not replace the need for solid instructional design and planning. The rules of learning do not change simply by adding gamified elements to your courses.

It may sound contradictory, but it is important to realize, as learners and educators exploring the benefits of gamification, that not everything needs to be a game or an entertainment. That are skills we develop when confronted with and when we experience different ways to interact with content. One must be mindful of not simplifying learning and social experiences by reducing them to a unimodality.
