I would say that the top percentage of vocal coaches are able to play an instrument (primarily piano). However, the ability to play an instrument isn't completely necessary. I have a favorite paid app for teaching rhythm; however, you have to be able to read music notation before you can even understand it. Rhythm is fundamental to understand pitch. I am also a huge music history buff, which has radically changed my approach to repertoire and insight.

Although I know some great vocal coaches with little or no instrumental skills, being able to accompany skilfully on the piano has enabled my career enormously - being able to note bash melodies or run through auditions songs .. but above all agree musical knowledge is a key to underpin and musical teaching.

I disagree that it’s necessary to play an instrument to be a great vocal coach. In fact, by using either backing tracks, apps such as appcompanist and professional accompanists to accompany the singer allows the coach to focus solely on the singer AND allows the singer to learn the skill set of finding and working with accompaniment, independently of their vocal coach. Musical knowledge required depends largely on the speciality of the coach. If a coach is focused on performance craft or artistry, the knowledge needed is very different from training professional opera singers and is different again from working with metal singers. The important thing is the knowledge is aligned with what the coach is offering.

There are methods and schools of technique which are fascinating and useful things in niche areas, but at the end of the day - can your instructor sing, or can their students. Vocal coaches particularly need business skills if they are independent; working in academia and working for multi-teacher studios are ways to reduce the need for business skills. Personally I cannot imagine being a vocal coach without the hundreds of hours I’ve spent learning to be a business owner. It makes me better at my coaching to be good at running my business.
