What are the most important things to avoid in a Network Engineering interview?

It's crucial to avoid showing a lack of practical exp. While theoretical understanding is important, demonstrating the ability to apply knowledge in real-world scenarios is key. Be ready to provide specific ex. of hands-on experience, such as network configs or security implementations. Discuss your familiarity with various networking protocols, systems, and tshooting techs. Failing to showcase practical skills may raise doubts about your competence in handling the job's demands. Emphasize both your strong theoretical foundation and your capability to apply this knowledge effectively in real-world tasks. This balance will illustrate your readiness for the role and your ability to contribute effectively to practical network solutions.

You simply cannot engineer anything without ‘getting your hands dirty’. You might exhibit a lack of confidence in your interview. The ‘heavy-lifting’ is essential. Connecting a console cable to a router’s console port and running a terminal emulator program to gain access to the router is baptismal!

Overcomplicating the response...Just awnser the question as clearly, concisely, and confidently as you can, and stop. Less is more

If you don’t know something, that’s ok. Admit you don’t know, but do not make things up. Turn not knowing into a win by explaining how you would solve the problem or find the answer…something more detailed than “google it”.

Do not try to pass on Network Operations and other network related experience as Network Engineering/Architect experience. This leaves interviewed in disappointment. Rather one should say, I have experience in other areas of network and i want to explore engineering role. Interviews will be more considerate as everyone appreciates honesty. All the designers/engineers/architects would have worked in operations or other areas, so they understand they have hire the right candidate and groom them for design/engineering work.

Not being professional will get you every time. In my last role I sat in on interviews regularly, and the thing that stood out to me when interviewing unprofessional candidates was the way they communicate. Insulting comments like calling old co-workers idiots and things of that nature is unprofessional. Also acting as if the interviewers are not as smart as you are makes the interviewers question if you are coachable or teachable. Also any mention of being an expert just because you have been doing it a long time raises red flags to the interviewers

Highlight your technical abilities while specifying your openess to learning other skills. Be sincere if we do not have experience.

Despite of the old opinions “after learning theories should spend multiple years in every level to be professional “, thanks to the new training methods lots of practicality knowledge is delivered but nowadays market needs multiple skills besides the networking like cloud computing, programming or security. They’re combined to network and infrastructure knowledges, so junior engineers not only are confused to select additional skills but also not having infinite time to be prepared for the market opportunities. They need money ??to get forward. On job training methods are not effective anymore because they leave after achieving market’s needs in your company. Hire most intelligent engineers and keep them till you could and then forget them.

It's not just for the interview, but in general, even after you get the job. You have to keep yourself updated.

Be focused and attentive during the process and make it clear you have an interest in working there. It’s just good form to be attentive and focused at the time of the interview. Have some prepared questions to ask the people interviewing you. Sometimes during the interview or after you may change your mind about the position or the company, but don’t show that. Work with the situation until the interview is over. Be cognizant of their time and your time and know your subject matter.

As network engineers responsible for implementing and maintaining critical production systems hence pressure handling is an inherent part of the job. For instance, if an engineer is troubleshooting a network outage there is always pressure from the management to resolve the issue ASAP. Consequently, during an interview, if the applicant demonstrates a lack of pressure-handling ability, it would negatively impact the outcome of the interview. Additionally, a network engineer must be an expert in their domain and should possess exceptional troubleshooting skills to excel in their domain. These are some of the key skills that an interview board searches for.

In my experience the pressure in the interview usually comes from the interviewers. There are usually multiple people asking you questions in a Network Engineer's interview. Each facilitator normally has a focused set of questions. They are usually diverse from one another so you have to be ready to switch gears and talk about configurations, networking concepts, and your impact on you current company or team.

Network Engineering isn't for the faint of heart. Being able to keep a level head under pressure is key to issue resolution. If an applicant cannot handle the pressure of an interview how would he or she handle the pressures of a critical outage? Being able to demonstrate the ability to maintain a level head regardless of circumstances is almost more important than technical skill. The latter can be trained, the former is much harder to develop.

A part from being aware of the latest trends in networking protocol design and specifications from leading international standardisation bodies (IEEE, Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF.org), LoRa Alliance, etc.) and understand their impact and consequences on the deployment of next generation networks and how to prepare viable and non-disruptive transitional plans for businesses and organisations and make a good strategic use of their budget expenditure, a good network engineer has to demonstrate its skills by professional certifications and accreditations and strive to get the highest ones possible (Cisco CCIE or equivalent for example). It is also important to continue sharing gained knowledge through blogs, how-to manuals, etc.

Interviews can tend to get into the weeds on what I would often term as "exam questions" that are difficult to recall specifics on if it's not a function you regularly perform. Most can only keep so many things memorized, and it is fair to say that as an engineer I would refer back to notes and templates constantly. Even if you can't recall every line of configuration, it's good to demonstrate that you understand what the configs are for when you do see them. It's also helpful to articulate the breadth of experience you have gained over time, even if you are rusty on some topics. IT is a very complex and ever-changing career.

Do not lie in an interview. If you were asked about a tech topic not familiar to you, it's ok to say IDK. If you fib and they dig further, you'll be in trouble. I once interviewed a candidate who said they knew Linux. I shared my terminal and requested they execute some commands they know. The candidate refused. The interview was over 5 minutes later. Let's say you are asked about ISIS but it's not your thing. Turn that question around and talk about a protocol you know e.g. "I've never used ISIS in my environment. We ran OSPF which is a link state protocol like ISIS. It forms neighborships before LSA's are propagated, etc." To the mature hiring manager, this response shows you know routing protocols and could learn ISIS if required.

Be sure to showcast your accomplishments in a clear and understandable manner, highlighting how they positively impacted the bussines or the theam you work for. I beleive recruiters are looking for competence, so be also ready to share situations where something went wrong or unexpected, and what was your reaction in that situation. Last, be curious ahout the company you are applying for and how does it fit for you and how do you fit for them. In my experience the jobs you would best enjoy are those in which the company purpose align with you in some way. Best of luck.
