What are the most important skills for a Product Designer to be adaptable in a fast-paced work environment?

In fast-paced environment You don’t need to validate every small design choice to get the confidence to proceed with it. ?? You don’t need a usability study to test straightforward functionality like basic forms. If you use software intentionally and develop a good general understanding of how people interact with software, you should be able to design universal interactions without asking users if they make sense. ?? Don’t waste your effort and time on testing stuff that should be obvious to design. ?? Use your common sense and avoid over-complicating interactions. ?? There are consumer apps serving millions of users effectively, and they do it with well-established interaction patterns. Emulate those. Don’t reinvent the wheel. ??

The first step is to know who your actual user is. I had a recent realisation where while I thought everyone in my client organization was using my product only 3 to 4 were using it due to the sensitive information it holds. They did not want to grant access to a larger team. So any feature I build for the remaining folks will be useless. So, understand who uses your product, how they use it, how often they use it, what other tools do they use it with, what incremental innovations they have done on top of your product.

Prior to any new product planning, this is an important factor. This study should not only cover what are the explicit and implicit needs of a customer/ user, but also the sentiments and feelings of them. This is essential because, even if the product is good, when their sentiments and feelings are not aligned, the product will be a failure. In Indian car markets we have an example for that, TATA Nano. Though it is a good car, the marketing of saying cheapest car, made this to be a failure. Because, the Indian car users see the car as status also. So, the claim of cheapest car actually killed the product.

In a fast-paced environment, your user research can rely on experiences and documentation about projects, previous design decisions, etc. While the best solution is creating fast-serving research methods, senior designer institutions can not be denied.

One thing I found helpful is to avoid hiding behind surveys, research, and testing and start talking to customers directly. It is the fastest way to understand your target audience for more empathy, which leads to better designs.

When you have two days for a project, leave the first day for planing. On the second day, you can be flexible and work iterative. Rapid prototyping in every single step could be helpful.

Thinking in terms of the product lifecycle.. planning timelines and must have steps to accommodate reviews and align customers feedback/ satisfaction. Ensuring just the right process to achieve overall design goals comes as a result of experience and expertise in applying the right design thinking.

Prototyping is fundamental to Industrial Design. Pretty pictures might satisfy the Marketing department but not Operations. 1. Get full scale mockups working early. Nothing beats seeing it at full scale even if its made of foam core. 2. 3D prints are great, but accept that your engineering is required before an accurate 3d model can be made. 3. Production Prototypes are necessary, not optional. Certain processes in rapid prototyping don't translate to production. Get prototypes and first articles as soon as you can. But not before you've got a Purchase Order. Without a Purchase Order you're just providing free R&D to your competitor. Clients love taking your prototypes & bidding them out to other lazy non-design, non-engineering companies.

This is where the real learning happens. Create something you can put in someone’s hands and watch what happens. Do this across a dozen people and you’ll have great insights into what to adjust.

The one who keeps balancing between collaborations and progress on workflow is able to do well in very tight deadlines and shorter engagements compared to one working on a long term product evolution effort.

Besides the obvious technical UX skills it is also important to understand that in fast paced environments projects and requirements can also change just as fast. There are instances where your project is going in one direction but new information has presented itself and drastically changes the idea that you were working on. Framing these sudden changes as opportunities instead of problems will help you maintain clarity and keep an open mind so that you can continue to in provide the best UX possible for your users.

1. Agility and motivation are two important skill sets that a designer should focus on. Yes, being great at UX, UI is great but as a designer you'd have to work alone - hence, motivation and solve different problem statements - hence, agile nature.

What I think we may have to consider as designers is the ability to listen to feedback, ability to validate ideas not because we believe they will empirically yield a predetermined result but because a little bit of variation may make a difference in how experience is perceived by users. We need to be open to trying new things and be willing to learn.

Emotional Intelligence. Every single thing you do as a product designer involves people trying to do a thing. They are frustrated, focused, lost, embarrassed, stressed out, behind schedule, ignorant of your services, etc…. When you aren’t working to understand that, you’re going to be working to understand product managers, stakeholders, decision makers, vendors, engineers, and collaborators. Focus on the root of the problem, and most frequently the root of the problem is emotional.

Everything mentioned here is crucial, However to be a great product designer, it is important to be connected to the business goals and the product goals. Keep asking questions and provide ideas and suggestions that will improve both the product and the business goals
