In my experience, PPE choices should be based on a PPE assessment that identifies the hazards of different machines that affect the operators. At a minimum, wear safety glasses to shield your eyes, gloves to protect your hands, and earmuffs or earplugs to guard against noise-induced hearing damage. Additional PPE, such as steel-toed boots and face shields, may be necessary depending on the machining processes and materials used. As there are no overhead hazards in the workshop, my team says that a helmet would have a negative effect working as it would disturb their mental concentration and health while working. Could anyone give me a definitive answer on whether a helmet is necessary in this scenario?

If you are on a lathe grease your chuck before every shift, you can have a dramatic reduction in clamping force without proper lubrication in the chuck. People get seriously hurt on lathes vastly more than they do on a mill, having the part come out or whipping a bar are probably the two most dangerous common occurrences.

Small problems are generally not hard or terribly expensive to fix, ignore the small things long enough and you will experience a lot more downtime and a much more expensive repair. Clean well maintained machines make more money!!

Health and safety goes deeper than what you can see on the surface... As example one of the bigger hazards that is often over looked when working in a machine shop is air quality and coolant quality. What do I mean by this? Well let me tell you from experience, a perfect example that stumped even the best machinist... I worked in a larger machine shop producing parts for large OEMs, well everyone in the factory kept getting sick.. to cut to the chase, the operators dumped in the ice from their water and drinks at the end of the shift in to the cnc machine, which caused bacteria growth in the coolant. While the machines ran it turned to mist and everyone was breathing that air... yeah ... Sometimes the dangers are hidden.

Trust but verify... especially when taking over a machine or set up. Always remember you are operating a machine that has no feelings or considerations of the operator. Safety procedures can never be overlooked.Your machine will not look to see if there is anything in it's way. It will go directly to coordinates when something tells it to. That being said , never reach into a machine without activating proper safety procexures.

Jeff, Your on-point! A simple coolant refractometer and PH Test Strips would have helped to control the pH to be between 8-9 to prevent bacterial growth. So many do not take care of their metalworking fluids. Oil Skimmers and will help reduce the bacterial levels as well. *** For worker safety and to protect expensive equipment, I preach that low pressure air hoses are to be used to blow off the fixture and vice locating surfaces for the parts to be machined. Other surfaces can be cleaned with a coolant wash-off hose and with brushes, brooms and squeegees. ***
