I loved AFP when I was starting out as a new professional fundraiser. It gave me a great space to learn and grow with colleagues. I was lucky enough to Chair the DFW Luncheon in 2012, and have made lifelong friendships. On the technical side, I was able to hone my craft, and rise in the nonprofit industry. I was a member for 14+ years, in two States. I recommend joining, wholeheartedly.

Learning from other nonprofit professionals is also key. In the city you live in, form or join group chats about fundraising- I’ve always found that LinkedIn has good content and people who are passionate about fundraising and the practice of it.

Learning about philanthropy through local organizations has many benefits. The Council on Foundations (COF) can direct you to a community foundation in your area. When I shifted from working the soup kitchen to running the soup kitchen, the San Diego Foundation was a great resource. Another philanthropic organization that can direct you a local opportunity is Social Venture Partners International. There a chapters around the world. San Diego Social Venture Partners has provided me a wealth of opportunity and education. They are my “goto” for any executive looking to begin or enhance their philanthropic life.
