Remote leaders must invest their own time to develop themselves. The world is always moving and growing and if we want to stay relevant and on topic we need to be as well. Setting your own KPI's to track is a great way to ensure that we as leaders are always moving forward in our growth/development.

360 surveys have a place in the leaders development when administered by trained professionals/ consultants and can help the leader uncover blind spots, and potential strengths they should leverage more often. I also find regularly taking quiet time away from the machine of work to reflect on my own personal goals is a critical exercise to ensure I'm not drifting too far off the course I'm pursuing. And I can't over emphasize the importance of having a mentor to regularly touch base with for guidance when dealing with new or challenging situations, or to help provide you with that alternative perspective you hadn't considered before making a big decision.

Remaining authentic is really important in leadership both remotely and in person. The more someone understands who you are as a leader, the more they learn how you will respond to scenarios and feel they can trust you.

For me, an important measure for remote leadership is how proactively your team choose to update you; seek your counsel or coaching whilst working remote. Prompted to engage by us - is easy. Your people proactively approach you; valuing your input and also having the confidence to decide and act and the update you on what they've done - rather than seek consistent approval - are all signs you got it right. Over & above this - you know that your remote leadership is working when the values and behaviours you've agreed as a team are 'visible', timescales and qualitative and quantitative measures are being met and your team genuinely confirm that work life balance is good & their work & non work relationships are in good health.

This question seems to assume remote leaders should be measured against different metrics than on-site leaders. I’d ask a different question: given the measurable outcomes *all* leaders are expected to deliver at their company, what do remote leaders need to ensure they can do it as effectively as their on-site peers?

The elements mentioned above are important, but I'm not sure that I would classify them as performance indicators. They are, however, necessary barometers to determine the so being of remote employees. Indicators include goal attainment for realistic and achievable goals, innovative solutions to problems, response time, and accountability to tasks and assignments. Developing new ways to approach is problems, increase team efficiency and productivity are other indicators.

Do not become a chameleon leader...It is critical for your team and company to know what to expect from you as an individual. Being authentic and true to your values will actually bring more value to your organization compared to those that will change depending on who they are talking to (CEO, direct reports, interns, etc). Stay humble, yet hungry. Remember those that helped mold and shape what you have become but understand that you aren't ever a finished product and that you must be willing to learn from every source available to you.
