What are the most important MIS skills for software development?

I would say it is a combination of business inteligence, programming languages, and an intuition into what the customer needs. Listen, and remember that you are not the customer. No matter your technical skill, the end result needs to meet the customers requirements. You need to be able to take the user/customer requirements and translate them into an efficient, workable solution. Too many people get wrapped up in themselves and forget what the end result needs to be.

In my experience, the most important skills needed for software development is the ability to write clean, maintainable and readable code with thorough documentation using test driven development best practices.

Comprehensive understanding of the most recent technological developments: No matter what programming language set a developer uses, it should always be explanatory to another developer in the future. Database structures should always be designed to handle large amounts of complicated data. Furthermore, the database can be upgraded, including legacy data, if stakeholders want significant changes. UI/UX are not just features but the face of any information system. Therefore, they should be attractive, informative, convenient, and acceptable to stakeholders. Abilities such as being a good listener, having analytical skills, being patient, troubleshooting problems, and regular consultation make a versatile and adaptable professional system.

One of the valuable MIS skill in software development is the ability to explain technical details in simple terms for non-tech folks.

I have all too often seen that databases are designed and access modules are coded using test databases with limited data amounts that do not reveal poor performance until the code and databases are deployed into production. A good developer should be confident in query optimization.

There are some really good contributions here. One of the things that I keep running across even past the logical and physical design, SQL, triggers, maintenance, and all of the other things people have mentioned, is documentation. I have run across so many databases that do not have an ERD, design notes, table reasoning, field notes / descriptions, etc. Someone new will look at that database 5 years down the road and wonder what the person who designed it was thinking because there is not one shred of documentation. I have seen so many with no documentation and no idea what the tables or fields are based on the way they named them, yet they are a part of what keeps the company running.

A critical skill in MIS is ability to design an efficient database schema. Additionally, knowing how to code to effectively retrieve the data needed from back-end databases is imperative. Lack of either results in applications that cannot function optimally or an out age or impact on user experience.

You have to be good at data modelling and then excellent at SQL. These two are the absolute basics. Next in line is to understand how to design scalable data models . The infrastructure aspect of database management can be learnt easily based on whether its Oracle , SQL server or AWS RDS etc

I have had the opportunity to work with very experienced DBAs who keep the databases in optimal condition, well modeled, with indexes, primary and foreign keys, well normalized. I've also seen the opposite, non-atomized fields, improperly or unnecessarily compounded keys, stored procedures that consume resources unnecessarily or could easily be replaced by triggers, etc. It may be too obvious, they really need to know what they're doing, it's not enough to know the commands of the database engine.

I have found UML very useful not just for the design phase but also to ensure the validity and completeness of business requirements. Although not all of UML diagrams are relevant to business, but some have been very useful to be shared for business requirements closure, such as sequences diagrams or prototype diagrams.

In my experience, the most important thing is good agile dev/ops pipeline that includes version control system and GitFlow practice.

When looking for software engineering skills, I am looking for individuals who can solve problems, have a core foundation in SSDLC processes and tools, and have at least one language where they have expert level skillset.

A good understanding of version control (git) and the ability to test your own code properly are very useful (unit tests and scenario testing). The latter requires a developer to have a good understanding of the business or user requirements which he is developing for.

One aspect to help drive your business....Data is very important in decision making, however if you can not get to the data or have the most important information when you need it, what is the purpose of having it? Visualization of your data through an intuitive Business intelligence (BI) tool and one that can produce reports quickly, and can cater to how your audience wants to see the data is a very important aspect.

The very fast-changing and dynamic business environment we live in now requires prompt and insightful decisions to be made from data to steer management decisions for better outcomes. As such, a key way to interpret data is to use a low technical language to promote effective data communication to stakeholders.

Understanding of BI tools in general for extracting, transforming, and visualizing data and applying those skills in creating dashboards and reports to aid decision-making. Data = gold but only if it helps your business further and understand your business down to process level.

When designing user interfaces we have to consider the audience or users, it is more psychology than technical. What data is more relevant to show or collect? The size and font to use, be practical before trending. Most of the time applications failed because of the way is is presented to the user. Know how the process is made manually and it will help you design a practical GUI, then choose the correct colors and fonts to make the experience a good one.

In my experience the user interface design should go beyond the surface level; seamlessly integrating back-end systems and harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning. These technologies enable us to create interfaces that intelligently adapt to evolving user behavior. Consider it a blend of human-centric design and technological advancements paving the way for interfaces that can anticipate user needs. This fusion of knowledge is akin to a stroke of multidisciplinary genius. It's not just about understanding the human psyche or writing code. It's about designing the future!!

User interface shouldn't be over thought. Keep it simple, an intuitive path from A to B regardless of application, and, if an interface is used incorrectly then the fault is not with the user, its the design. Consideration needs to be given to accessibility, who is using the app, sight and/ or visual impairment, etc. Variable testing is key.

A crucial element of user interface design involves conducting early testing with actual users. From my own experience, it can be somewhat painful to observe a user, provided with a list of simple tasks to complete within your interface, mistakenly clicking the incorrect button or searching for options in locations different from where you deemed most logical. Employing prototypes can significantly aid in this process. Following the test, conducting interviews with users to understand their reasoning and thought processes behind their actions can provide invaluable insights. This approach not only identifies usability issues but also enhances the overall design by incorporating user feedback into subsequent iterations.

The user interface design is the storyline(As I call it) to the beginning of a Perfected user experience. The baseline of creativity, structure and execution of design is the most important factor of the project and the most critical element of the design. Therefore application processes are the key components of the project at hand.

Business analysis & Design - Understand business problems and come up with a technology solution blueprint. Define the use cases. Develop - create team or do software development based on the blueprint and analysis. This is what the users and business need. Sometimes this is about innovation, sometimes its invention. Test - ability to test the software and solution in the real world. Deploy - Implement the software and train users so they can effectively use what was developed. Support - changes happen, bugs happen. Be ready to support the users when help is needed.

Awareness of commercial alternatives in the domain of desired solution , as sometimes it makes a great deal of sense to "borrow" ideas from existing solutions for your implementation, and not inventing all wheels fully on your own. In addition, in lots of cases it is very logical to integrate and automate custom services with supplimentary commercial modules/services via APIs, instead of a way longer delivery of the whole a-to-z solution from scratch.

TIME Problem statements listed here are more overview level solutions which requires a key variable which is TIME. This should also have been a part of the list as when some MIS / dashboard / solution is to be given, timelines play a crucial role in the process. No matter how great a solution may be on any tool but if it consumes more time when compared to getting it done on any another tool which may be less powerful but can get things done faster in shorter TIME then the business will faster route. Businesses have come a long way from simple spreadsheets to powerful dataframes (some examples) in computing their data to get deeper insights. Champions of these tools will clearly realise the point being made here. Agree, disagree?

Has anyone mentioned anything (yet) about user adoption, documentation and troubleshooting? In my opinion, getting closer to the project delivery date the project sponsor wants it to be handed over to the business, the faster the better. Even when agreed in PID and Plan this is still a step that will "solve itself when we go live" is my experience unfortunately many times.

Actually the mis is project mngt, build and release calendar and bug tracker.. Of course the UAT and sign off is another import MiS for SDLC tracking.
