1 Types of AS/RS

Different types of AS/RS exist depending on the size, shape, and weight of the items to be stored and retrieved. Unit load AS/RS, for instance, are used for large and heavy pallets or containers with cranes or shuttle vehicles moving them along aisles and vertical levels. Mini load AS/RS, on the other hand, handle smaller and lighter items like cartons or bins with robotic arms or carousels accessing them from racks or shelves. Vertical lift modules (VLM) consist of two columns of trays with a lifting device in the center that can move up and down to access any tray. Finally, horizontal carousels involve a series of bins or shelves that rotate horizontally around a track, bringing the desired item to the operator.

2 Software and controls

Software and controls are essential for an AS/RS to manage inventory, coordinate machine movements, and communicate with other systems and devices. Functions such as inventory management, order fulfillment, machine optimization, and data analysis can be provided. Inventory management tracks the location, quantity, and status of the items in the AS/RS in real time. Order fulfillment receives orders from the WMS or ERP system and assigns them to machines for picking or replenishment. Machine optimization optimizes the speed, accuracy, and energy efficiency of the machines while detecting and resolving errors or malfunctions. Data analysis collects and analyzes data from the AS/RS such as performance, productivity, quality, and costs, then generates reports and insights for improvement.

3 Integration and flexibility

Integrating and making your AS/RS flexible is essential for it to work well with other warehouse processes and systems, and to adapt to changing demands and conditions. To do this, you should connect the AS/RS to other material handling equipment like conveyors, sorters, robots, or automated guided vehicles (AGVs) to create a smooth flow of goods. Additionally, link the AS/RS to the WMS or ERP system for exchanging information and instructions, as well as synchronizing the inventory and order data. Furthermore, design the AS/RS to accommodate different types, sizes, and quantities of items, with the ability to expand or modify the storage capacity or layout.

4 Safety and maintenance

In order to prevent accidents, injuries, damages, or downtime, an AS/RS needs to be safe and well-maintained. This can be achieved by adhering to safety regulations and standards such as OSHA or ANSI and installing safety features like sensors, alarms, barriers, guards, or emergency stops. Additionally, regular inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and repairs should be conducted and records and logs of the maintenance activities should be kept. Finally, operators and workers should be trained on how to use the AS/RS as well as how to follow the safety procedures and protocols.
