What are the most important factors to consider when evaluating a company's culture?

When evaluating a company's culture, three important factors that I always suggest my clients to consider are: 1. Values and Mission Assess if the company's values align with your own and if its mission statement reflects a purpose you can get behind. A strong cultural fit is vital for job satisfaction. 2. Employee Engagement Look at how engaged and happy the employees are. High morale and a sense of belonging often indicate a positive culture. 3. Communication and Leadership Evaluate how transparent and effective communication is within the company. Strong leadership that promotes open dialogue and supports growth can be a key indicator of a healthy culture!

I prescribe to the fact, that small things matter, while bold statements and back lit signs may broadcast the Co culture, it is to be seen how at a grass root level it has been adopted and demonstrated in actions, always! Small acts Consistency Everywhere

This is personal. What's important to you? From the company's mission and vision to the day-to-day policies and practices, your salient points, eg. your non-negotiables, are the most important factors when evaluating a company's culture.

Evaluate how well the organization translates its high-level goals into actionable strategies. A robust culture aligns these aspirations with day-to-day tasks, ensuring that every employee contributes meaningfully to the overarching mission.

I think beyond avoiding a toxic leadership it is important to find a supportive one. How do they show up? Are they a “my” team or “our” team, do they lead in a way that allows each employee to feel valued and a sense of belonging. Do they truly understand work is not your life but a way to support your life. Ask for staff retention numbers and dig into if any populations leave faster than others. This can tell you a lot of a sense of belonging and their leadership priorities.

A strong cultural fit is evident when leadership not only articulates values but also consistently demonstrates them. Evaluate how leaders delegate responsibilities and involve employees in the decision-making process.

As you evaluate a company’s leadership and management, learn how your potential managers and leaders interact with you, their team, their manager, and peers. Most interviews focus on the immediate manager and candidate. Also find out how your direct manager interacts with the rest of the team. What is the manager’s work style, personality while stressed, reward style, schedule, priorities, and relationship with their manager? Go further to learn how your direct manager interacts with their peers and leaders. Do they get along well, support each other, and behave in a friendly way? Or, is there tension, competition, and unprofessional behavior? Can you trust them to lead the company well? Can you trust them with your career?

In evaluating a company's culture it is key to take into consideration the viewpoints of the employee's in garnering an appreciation for the overall culture of that company/ organization. In evaluating the culture in an depth manner the following should be considered but not be limited to: 1. Respect and or Fairness 2. Teamwork 3. Trust and or Integrity 4. Change and or Adaptability 5. Communication 6.Decision Making. Culture in any organization takes time , so it is key to be consistent in and when creating experiences and attributes of a strong culture

The above mentioned are great! To continue to go deeper, talk with people at all levels about how mistakes have been handled throughout the organization. I often think that you can learn the most about an organization through how they handle mistakes, adversity, and moving forward.

In a culture aligned with its values, acknowledgment and rewards are tied to behaviors that exemplify the stated principles. Look for organizations where the desired cultural traits are not only articulated but also consistently reflected in daily behavior

A company's core values must be visible through every level of the organization, although the time and access needed to analyze such alignment is unlikely. A quick method to uncover fit is to ask, "Which of the company's core values is most important?" If values are sequential, like Amazon's "It's always Day 1," it's quickly answered, and you can delve deeper ("What does 'It's always Day 1' mean to you?"). This question also yields an informed ranking for unordered core values, which can also be used to initiate further discussion with the hiring cadre. Core values are true beliefs, not aspirational ideals, and the organization represented by leadership, management, and employees genuinely living its values is an essential health indicator.

Also think about what your values and norms are and see if they match. Some companies won't have any which cause for concern in itself. Ask to speak to people in similar roles and ask them how they would describe the culture and values.

Virtually EVERY company has a set of values posted online and, often, in its job postings. Such values are mere table stakes. What matters more are the norms of how the values are actually practiced or experienced, vice what the corporate leadership team wants to convey. Look for signs that the norms reflect the values and that current employees reflect both the norms and values.

This needs to be proportionate to their size. a business with less than 200 people is not going to have a diversity specialist but they should have policies, statements etc.... Look at the diversity of the top team and below as well as statements they do and don't make in this area on social media.

Depending on your preference, culture fit can mean a variety of factors such as a company's core values, mission & vision, leadership style, work-life-balance, consideration for diversity etc. Consider what is important for you in your current career level as well as potential for growth within the organization.

How does the company invest in the personal development of employees? 4. Is there an intrepreneurship culture? 5. How are decisions made that impact culture? e.g. do employees have any input into the changes implemented

As a job applicant, try to find as many information as possible online about the company. This includes Glassdoor and Indeed reviews. Also, check out news outlets and social media (LinkedIn, Twitter and Reddit) for any relevant information about the workplace. As a new employee, take the time to observe, actively listen to your new colleagues and pay attention to interactions in meetings. Much of the communication is unsaid, so pay attention to body languages. Overall, If your coworkers are the colleagues you could easily go for coffee (i.e. you enjoy working with) and you feel like growing from a personal and professional person, then it is, this is the right place and work culture for you!
