The pandemic spurred a lot of discussion about indoor air quality. Increased air change rates and supply air filtration are two of the more common issues debated. An increase in cleaning protocol can exacerbate indoor air quality depending on the cleaning chemicals used. Many institutes reviewed these chemicals and made changes to greener more environmentally friendly options. Heightened awareness of personal hygene brought yet more chemicals into the environment in hand sanitizers, which are irritants as well as sanitizers. Design teams are more aware of these issues and need to have ongoing discussions with owners.

Thermal comfort is the state of mind that expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment. It depends on several factors, such as air temperature, humidity, air movement, radiant temperature, clothing, and activity level. Learning from the pandemic, it is evident that being part of an inclusive social community is vital to well-being. Thus, fostering a sense of community is a crucial in an effective school design. A key strategy is through visual connectivity. For instance, arranging classrooms and labs round a central atrium transforms it into the heart or the living room of the school, where people can see and be seen across different levels and spaces. With adding collaborative areas, open breakout lounges and principal circulation routes into the atrium, we not only enhance the communal aspect of the learning experience, but also contributes to passive safety, as it may minimize bullying by facilitating easier adult supervision.

6 Outdoor environment

Outdoor environment is the natural and built environment that surrounds and interacts with the school building, and how it affects the health, well-being, and learning of the students and teachers. Outdoor environment can provide opportunities for physical activity, recreation, exploration, and connection with nature, as well as for environmental education and stewardship. Environmental design for schools should aim to enhance the quality and diversity of the outdoor environment by creating green spaces, gardens, playgrounds, sports fields, and trails that are safe, accessible, and attractive, as well as by using sustainable materials, practices, and technologies that reduce the environmental impact and footprint of the school.

Adicional a lo que se menciona en los apartados anteriores, es importante consideremos los elementos sustantivos de las escuelas en el dise?o ambiental. Me enfocaré en dos de estas funciones sustantivas: ense?anza y la vinculación. -Se requiere para el dise?o ambiental formar a maestros, administrativos y estudiantes en el tema, ya que no necesariamente son expertos en el tema y esto permitirá disminuir su resistencia al cambio ante proyectos ambientales. -Vinculación: Identificar como se puede colaborar con otros actores de la comunidad para un mejor dise?o ambiental dentro y fuera de la escuela es importante.
