Many companies know the importance of training and offer resources as self-paced training tools, subscriptions or reimbursement for courses to their IT staff. One thing that is often overlooked is that training needs time. Last minute request, long troubleshooting, meetings and bau work don’t leave time for training during office hours. Commute to and from the office and family life also requires time. Training should be an office planned activity with specific time allocated. I believe that beside the self-paced trainings a valuable resource is experience sharing. A colleague that can explain the what and the how of the technology or product that we are learning hands-on is precious.

I've always seen edge computing as being just a next step in traditional architectures that are utilizing cloud technologies within their own environment. Making sure only to provide the essential services on top of the security architecture. That integrates with the resources in the cloud.

Having recently entered the industry and graduating a year ago, I've noticed a gap in cybersecurity education, specifically in cloud security. Universities often focus on traditional methods of teaching focusing heavily on age old technologies and on premise infrastructure. Graduates must take the initiative to extend their knowledge to cloud environments. Building a hybrid home lab (between your home infra and cloud) and taking the initiative to prepare for certifications are the key. Both educational institutions and individuals must adapt to evolving industry needs, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of security principles in both traditional and cloud contexts.

A recent Forbes report I was reading indicated that by the end of 2023, over 83% of enterprise workloads will be cloud-based, emphasizing the critical need to address the cloud security skills shortage. My transition from a business background into cybersecurity has shown me the challenges and prospects of gaining technical expertise in cyber and cloud security. Encouraging individuals from various fields to delve into cyber and cloud security is crucial. The cloud security skills gap is a pressing concern for organizations worldwide. As digital transformation accelerates, the demand for skilled IT professionals who can effectively manage cloud networks and services has surged. Organizations struggle to address security challenges specific to cloud environments. They tend to use legacy solutions and lack consistency in security policies and configurations. When adopting cloud networks, organizations often recreate the same security issues present in their traditional networks. Security is often added as an afterthought, and legacy solutions are implemented in the cloud without proper adaptation.

In my experience, looking at it from a skills gap and large number of open job reqs will give a false sense of need. Most organizations would benefit from having a few extra hands in each project but learning enough to be trusted with the business infrastructure is big responsibility. What seems like a job, is really sustaining a company to be available and safe from the ongoing threats. If you want to meet the skills gap, you need to get your hands on actually building things with cloud technology just to start.

One thing I try to keep in mind. What am I interested in is what I am going to focus on. There is a lot to cover in cybersecurity in general but focusing on what interest you, will go a lot further when it comes to dedicating time. If you are not interested in a particular space, stay away. There is no need to know everything. Master what you love, supplement what you need. The rest will sort itself out!
