What are the most effective ways for vocal coaches to adapt to new technology and teaching methods?

As a vocal coach I have come to develop my aural skills being able to analyse the voice successful on #Zoom and other online forums for teaching. I am one of the few Australian opera and classical teachers who still teach online. Having used online for over 10 years with students in the UK and Spain as well as interstate. It makes you accessible to students who desire your skills, even overseas and broadens your business reach.

There are a number of ways that Vocal Coaches can embrace new technology and teaching methods by : 1. Online Seminar- With this method they can get more students to teach and transfer knowledge to par time via Zoom, WhatsApp and Telegram 2. Instructional App- This can help by giving exercises, scales, phrases and lessons to students 3. Recorded Video/Lessons- Content recorded can be shared online on social media, can be sold on different platforms and can be converted into paid courses 4. Collaboration - synergizing with industry expert and tech expert can bring about improved method of teaching

I think the use of the many apps that display anatomical details of the larynx are very useful too. Applied anatomy is a really important part of being aware of the instrument of the voice. I’d love to see an augmented reality app for anatomy, but I’ve not found one yet that is good enough for the purposes of vocal tuition.

At The Elocution Coach we use Google Meet extensively for our one-to-ones with clients all over the world. When it comes to our Accent Softening and Public Speaking groups we use our Academy, which is our own platform within Circle App. It's important we continue to keep up to date with the updates on both these platforms, and also explore other options to address the glitches and negative points.

Stay connected to the music and arts community and share new concepts and ideas. Practice with each other and have conversations about what is working and what is not in different senerios.

I discovered even at the age of 77 that I embrace the new technology and pass a lot of the new apps to my own students. I especially love working with AI programs. Many of my students greatly appreciate my contributions. I especially love using Tome and Canva. So often, I have mind blockage until I realize I have a program that helps me overcome this mind block.

I always use a 1-10 scale when working with singers and speakers. 1: This is easy, lets do it all day. 10: My throat is bleeding. (Or death from fright is imminent.) Once we have a baseline of where we're starting from, we can work together to make positive changes. Being able to come back to that 1-10 scale is a great way for the student to assess their progress.

Another exciting advancement in this new technology,is I have had the opportunity to work with students in recording studios without leaving my home. Plus with Zoom, I have had the opportunity to record their lessons, as well as, they can also record their lessons. Therefore they can't come up with excuses why they don't remember what they did in their last class. We both have records of the class.

I survey my studio regularly (at least once a year) using Google Forms. I am usually amazed at the answers, even if only a few people respond. I always do an exit session with one-on-one cabaret clients, too. The answers help me create better systems for current and future clients, and let me know what they’re thinking about my offers, my studio culture, pricing, etc. It’s been very, VERY helpful. If you’re afraid to ask your clients what they think of your studio. . that means you really should! They also usually say some very nice things, too. ;)

The idea with a toolbox is that you're?also doing a portfolio assessment,?an opportunity to document your process as?well as the outcomes up all of those processes.?Process in this context,?is much more important.? That is where the key learning happen and where you?are going to build your toolbox?so that you can have?a strong foundation moving forward and enhancing what?it is that you do with the classroom but also and helping?to make wonderful creative music makers.Each week you will add a reflection to your Web-Based Tool-Box. This reflection will be made up of short writing samples based on no of questions.What went well in your classroom this week?? What successes did you and/or your students have?? and more.

As a singer, the biggest tool you have for building your toolbox is listening. You cannot learn style without listening to the artists who sing that genre of music. When you do, it's appropriation not appreciation. You also can't learn a new skill without knowing how that skill is supposed to sound and live within a song. For example, asking a student to "improvise" a jazz piece or "add a riff" to an R&B piece is impossible unless they have prior knowledge of what those things sound like and an example (or 10) of singers who do those things well. If you want to learn to riff, listen to Beyonce, Jessie J, or Mariah Carey. If you want to learn about jazz, listen to Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Nat King Cole.

I try to work with students in many genres. I believe that an artist can sing in more than one genre and in more than one language. I promote the concept of Diversity and Collaboration. We have seen this in the superstars. For example, Justin Bieber combined with one of the top Spanish artists. Jason Derulo combined with Tesher to make a music video combining Hollywood meets Bollywood. I am not impressed as a vocal coach, by singers with large ranges and power. Some of the great artists don't fit into this category. I think more of how the singer can offer something unique.

Technology has allowed my Voice and Diction clients to record and hear themselves — and compare their process as they progress. Understanding the power of language and diction is the most challenging. And the most revealing. Using the interpretation of Prominent actors as a guide has quicken the clarity and power of performance.

This has been a great tool and stimulus for my younger students/singers and I use it to inspire older who had a more narrow idea of repertoire and vocal technique for their styles. They start realising how voice and styles are the mosaic produced by biological functions: they can use them as ingredients, they can experiment as in recipes (the only things you cannot do is force them dysfunctionally), and they feel surprised by how they get to creative solutions so appropriate.

As a educator from India today the music awareness is widespread but not everyone understands genre, we as Musicians we need to be the inspiring factor to educate, demonstrate and perform with the band. We can categorise Genres in the toolbox - Who are musicians to look for when it comes to a particular genre and provide the link from youtube in the tool box. the parents play a major role in the music education in india because they pay the fee, We as educators can be professionals and present the tool box which will have all the necessary information about the process, teaching methods, genres, exercises more. My mentor use to say to master a genre it takes a lifetime. This helps the student discovering their possibilities.

Collaboration is key. New work and advancements in voice science are always happening! To stay stuck in what you know and what you've done before is a disservice to you and to your clients. Social media is full of groups for voice teachers, vocal coaches, and singers. Use them!

I love collaborating with other voice teachers and professionals! As a member of (@officialnats) the National Association of Teachers of Singing and as a member of The SpeakEasy Cooperative,(@thespeakeasycooperative) having access to colleagues for conversations and camaraderie is essential, especially as an independent voice teacher.

I totally agree but at the same time must not mimic that artist which happens so often. I have seen the encouragement from vocal teachers to try to have their students sound like Whitney Houston as an example. I try to encourage my students to find their own voices by taking a song and doing it their own way.

As a musician i can teach and i can perform. Collaboration is a task which has its advantages and disadvantages, since i have worked in corporate industry we were taught to work with a team and i have great patients and conflict handling skills and i am quick with the solution, As a musician i have collaborated with lot of different artist and we make our music and also released some of the songs. The one thing i understood from collaborating is Learning, you will learn everyday when you collaborate, as a musician your skill grows everyday, the feedback and suggestions becomes some of the Skills i need to work on for my learning and more, We as musicians and educators we need to be open to be approachable which is very hard to find in today

I love this! It is one of the reasons I am presenting at Conferences so to open the discussion on this topic I am the pioneer of for vocal technique. Pioneering is a useful hard work alone task, bridging the new findings a team collaborative phase; very happy to be in this second phase.

You’re always in a position to learn, it’s important to hear new ideas and build exercises that open the students to new ways of thinking and applying techniques.

While the structures of the larynx do not change, the way we learn about them and diagnose their pathologies has expanded. The ways our clients connect and learn have changed, too. For many of us who were trained in classical collegiate pedagogy, this constant learning and updating can feel Sisyphean. You might want to say, “I don’t bother with that stuff, I just teach people to sing.” That’s the surest way to show you are scared of learning. Don’t be scared. Get help. Get advice. Learn a new skill every week or month, and practice it. You don’t have to keep all new skills in rotation, just ones that benefit you and your studio. You ask your singers to take risks to sing better; it’s good for you to take risks to TEACH better.

Some say that Internet is plenty of fake informations. Of course it is true, searching is an active plenty of responsibilities venture. Can I just say that the open access we have to qualitative infos and researches and knowledge just makes us able in a life to get to levels of sophistication and contribution we could not dream.

Workshops and seminars are great ways to continue learning. While some may be expensive and take time away from your current students, you reap the benefits by being able to help more students, which might help you retain them longer. That offsets the cost multiple times over. Plus, the cost might be tax-deductible.

The pandemic forced me to learn new skills, and I've continued as much as I can. I sought out information from a Facebook group, which then led to studying with an admin from the group. After a year of studying music technology, I've got a home studio setup that works really well.

With a degree in Early Childhood Education, our motto was children learn through play. The sad part is by the time they reach Grades 3 and 4 play is taken away. This also goes along with music. Music, which is fun, is also being taken away because it's not considered important by the academic gods. That was a reason why I quit teaching in the regular schools. I fully understood what Robin Williams had to say in the Dead Poet Society-Education today to teach students not to think. For short, students are taught to memorize or mimic.

I most enjoy when I can take a person who claims he can't sing and turn that totally around. For example, I had a student who was in the TV show So You Think You Can Dance. He actually was going to be the winner, but injured his leg. His mother contacted me to see if he could be trained to sing for auditions in NY. I stated, IF CAN SPEAK, HE CAN SING. Eventually, he ended up as a singer/dancer in the NY production of Newsies and then ended up singing and dancing in the movies The Greatest Showman & The Heights. Everybody has the potential to sing, but we give singing a raw deal. Example: When I ask a stranger can sing His or Her response is a nervous giggle and a look at the ceiling like are you kidding?

One of the most fun ways is to stay curious and learn from other areas. Like, what can you learn from, let's say, martial arts, that you can use as an artist, singer, or coach? What can you learn from Matisse? From jelly fish?

There is no greater technology than the human body. Teaching each other to listen to our body & intuition is essential to opening up the voice. Our entire body is an instrument, each tuned to it's own frequencies. Learning to listen to how our bodies are telling us to move, relax, and open are are key to the vocal process. ??????
