What are the most effective ways to use pop-ups for conversion rate optimization?

In digital marketing, pop-ups can be powerful tools if used wisely. Cart Abandonment: Use pop-ups when visitors are about to abandon the cart, offering discounts for completing the purchase. Feedback: Ask for feedback via discreet pop-up, improving the experience and collecting useful data. Live Notifications: Inform visitors about new content or offers with real-time pop-up notifications. A/B Testing: Conduct A/B testing to optimize pop-up design, copy, and trigger times.

Most people that go to a website simply don't take an action. The data varies but the common stat is somewhere between 97-99% of people will never take an action on a website. Pop-ups are an easy way to increase the percentage of visitors who take an action: -They are easy to create: Managing a website takes a lot of time, money and expertise. Pop-ups, on the other hand, are easy to add to a website and most people can design and edit pop-ups. -They allow you to test: Most pop-up providers make it easy to test different messaging, images and calls to action to see what performs. -They have excellent ROI: They usually have high engagement rates and ROI. Even one more conversion can often pay for the cost of pop-ups.

From our experience working with hundreds of thousands of websites that have used pop-ups for CRO, we see companies that do the following have the most success with using pop-ups with CRO: -Add value: people are busy so you have to be sure that you add value as a reason for people to engage with your pop-up. Provide a discount or tips or an ebook. -Respect the user experience: be sure that the UI/UX of your pop-up respects your user. Don't hide close buttons as an example. -Personalize and target: You need to personalize and target based on various things such as behaviors, demographics or geography. -Use integrations: Make your pop-ups part of your existing workflow through integrating with tools you already use. -Test, test, etc

One common pain point for website visitors is having multiple popups in a session, often within the first few seconds of arriving on a website for the first time. These are typically along the lines of: 1. The cookie consent banner 2. Request for an email address to unlock offers 3. Push notifications request Consider spreading these over multiple sessions. The cookie consent is essential for the first visit, but the email request and push notifications can be left until a return session or beyond. The customer doesn't know whether they want to hear from you again in their first moments on the site - they haven't even seen if they like what you have!

In addition to what @Chris Hood points out (too many popups in a single session), a common pitfall is companies and websites that do not think about how they are going to add value with a pop-up. As marketers, we have our goals. And a big goal for all of us is to get more of our website visitors to take an action. But, how do we do that? We have to give our visitors a good and clear reason to take an action. And, to do that, we have to add value. We have to show that by taking that action their life will be better or easier. Companies that aren't successful with pop-ups don't think of pop-ups as part of a larger marketing strategy of adding value to visitors and customers.

One of the great things about pop-ups is how easy they are to get started in helping with CRO. 1. Pick a tool: there are a lot of great tools out there and they each have their advantages/disadvantages. I encourage using a tool from a company dedicated to pop-ups rather than those provided as an after thought. 2. Clarify goal/s: What outcome do you want to drive? More e-mail subscribers? More social followers? Better conversions for your abandoned carts? More traffic to specific webpages? etc 3. Design and set live: Most tools have templates so designing your pop-ups should be easy. 4. Target: Find a tool that has great targeting and customization features. 5. Integrate: Integrate into your workflow. 5. Test, optimize, repeat.

Don't overuse pop-ups. Put a time delay or exit intent popup instead of one that comes up automatically. For time-delay, the best is to make it popup based on scroll percentage. Another effective way to use popups is to use it on a button (so when the button's clicked it pops up).
