What are the most effective ways to use multimedia and storytelling in e-learning?

One thing I have found in my teaching experience after 23+ years is to make the experience of learning interesting both for myself as well as for the students I service as their provider of information. “How do I do that on a daily basis?” The key to remember in this instance is knowing that people are generally visual learners; therefore, when disseminating knowledge must not feel like a “lecture” but a series of engagements. Start with an anime character asking the QOTD. Then, continue with vocabulary practice, check for understanding with an online challenge with immediate feedback. Continue with an article or video reiterating the concept, and have lessons embedded in Google Slides where the students follow along with the instructor.

Good multimedia in online learning can be very time-consuming. If you are just starting out, I suggest you focus first on making a few, high-quality short videos. Before sinking too much time into it, get honest feedback from your peers or students about technical details (How's my lighting? How's the quality? How's the sound?) and then about content details (Is it too long? Is it a good "chunk"? Did I make sense? ) Improvement is iterative - you won't get there on the first try, but with good feedback, you can continue to improve one video at a time.

It's not enough to tell a story. You must tell a story that resonates. It's easy to become enamored of a story that resonates with us but no one else. Tips for effective storytelling: + Practice writing stories from beginning to middle to end + Know your target audience, incorporate their pain points, and focus on what they find compelling + If the target is fuzzy or broad, aim for stories with universal appeal + Reimagine stories that connected in the past + Keep people invested by breaking a story into pieces, using each piece as a point of learning + Trim flabby writing and use single-word, active verbs + Use "in medias res"—beginning the story in the height of the crisis or challenge—to draw people into the story immediately

Storytelling is one of the most powerful (and underused) tools in education in my experience. Stories don’t have to be true, they don’t have to be serious, they just need to be captivating. A story can bring a student who didn’t see themselves in the material deeply into the content and have it come alive before their eyes. Engaging content presented through story telling and other methodologies is so important. With all of the stimuli come at us all of the time (not to mention to the students/learners) from different directions and devices, it's imperative to be able to somehow make the student/learner feel that this is for them in a real and tangible way. Audio (professionally recorded by a voiceover actor, for example) -- is something that is often overlooked completely or thought of at the last minute is crucial and can add another level of understanding to the course.
