Body language is not a reliable measure of veracity if you are just meeting someone. You need a baseline of behavior. Like mentioned earlier, what if they are neurodivergent? What if they were raised by a neurodivergent parent? What about culture? Western eye contact standards are not universal.

In an evaluation to do a job, all you have to do is recognize if they have the problem-solving and functional skills to work on your team to get the job done. With good questions, you don't have to identify whether they are lying or not, which you generally can't do anyways. Body language is about interviewing skill, nothing more, nothing less, and body language is NOT universal. One person's nose scratch means their nose is itchy, while another means your question is odd. Don't waste your time trying to "spot the lie".

So, go into candidate conversations anticipating you'll be lied to, but also go in armed with the knowledge that there are physiological reactions to lying (sweating, fidgeting, breathlessness). Even though statistics would lead us to believe otherwise, MOST people are still uncomfortable with lying. Provide a level of comfort by asking "Safe Zone" questions about hobbies, siblings, pets, where the candidate went to college, etc. This helps you better detect changes in vocal qualities and behaviors that might indicate deception in other parts of the interview.

I have realized that one simple way to get a more detailed response with open-ended questions is to just stay silent. Silence, especially in an interview, is uncomfortable, and our natural reaction as humans is to fill that silence with something. People will either provide more details or contradict themselves. I think this is a great way to verify if someone knows what they are talking about or just bluffing,

Typically I can tell when I ask them a question based off their resume. If you can't explain to me how you were able to produce the sales you mentioned, most of the time they didn't put in the work to get there. They were just part of team that made it and instead taking credit. A lot of candidates these days tend to think with their eyes, meaning they have to look up and think about the scenario before answering. Oh and if you take a long time to answer me, is another big sign.

Natural curiosity in the candidate and his/her experience/personality/competences of the interviewer is a great base not only for verifying whether the candidate is saying the truth. Open-ended questions and simply "could you be more specific on this and that" is the simplest way how to get the most of an interview.

By definition, cultural intelligence refers to the skill to relate and work effectively in culturally diverse situations. This applies also to reading and interpreting body language and being mindfull of ones own cultural heritage, biases and candidates cultural background.

I strongly believe that in order to improve in any area, the starting point is to be aware of your own shortcomings, biases, background and observe one′s own body language as well - many assumptions might be based on one′s own behaviors.

You should not focus on determining or finding out whether the candidate is lying, this should not be the main goal of an interview. The main goal of an interview should be to get to know the candidate and understand whether they would be a fit for the role/company/team by taking into consideration various sources of information, on of them being also non-verbal cues.

Other items to consider is the tone of the voice and confidence when talking. Depending on how someone answers a question with assertiveness.

You can't tell if a candidate is lying or not. This isn't an FBI movie. Unless you have a polygraph handy - which have been largely discredited anyway - you cannot possibly know if a candidate is lying or not, with any reasonable degree of accuracy. In your interviews, try to focus on measuring the top skills that you require in the role. Having decided on the skills, choose 1-2 relevant questions to ask the candidate, and then a scoring rubric to grade each answer. Then, ensure each candidate is asked the same questions in the same way, and score each candidate according to rubric you set up. This is basically a structured interview and gives you the best chance of hiring the best person for the job. Forget about lie detectors!
