It's always critical to identify the end goal of Database Performance Testing. The definition of done is totally depends on the different criteria to be considered for DB performance testing. There are certain parameters needed to consider that can impact DB performance- mainly Memory related parameters, no. of data, response time, scalability, etc. You need to come on the ground and decide how and what parameters are required to measure your project performance.

Depending on the kind of database ie OLAP or OLTP DB , performance metrics will vary and also the methods. With both on-premise and cloud architectures this is exciting.

We should check for queries which takes more I/O, CPU and run time. And accordingly we should check what is feasible, such as indexing, fragmentation, parallel processing, processing in bulk, materialized view, query rewrite and lots more .. Tools which can help are explain plan, analysing AWR etc

After running your tests, you can use tools as Oracle Enterprise Manager to collect top SQL queries by elapsed time, most executions etc. Then you need analyze it, and try to improve them. You can optimize queries by checking if chosen execution plan is the best, adding indexes or rewriting them. When creating indexes you always need to consider the whole picture, how new index will imapct general performace, not just single SQL query.

Database Performance Testing in an effective way on my perspective are 1. Identifying slow queries 2. Proper index of tables 3. Using perfect database engines if available by bench marking 4. Benchmark the database with various loads and with Volume 5. Last but not least Benchmark the Hardware along with the OS (server capacity)

One key aspect that cannot be ignored is the noise in all test results. This means that if you run the same performance test multiple times, you could see varying results. That noise should be quantified and taken into account when interpreting the data and if possible, reduce it to a bare minimum. There are many different reasons why a performance test could be noisy, so this task is not a trivial one, but very important to consider on every single test we run.
