What are the most effective ways to stand out from your colleagues in Business Strategy?

In my perspective, the most successful approach to crafting a business strategy that places us a step ahead of our colleagues and peers is centred on creating enduring value for oneself, the team, and the organization. This commences with cultivating a profound comprehension of essential business skills, adept people management, and a dedication to effective implementation. The pivotal role of strategic planning and its seamless execution cannot be overstated in maintaining our competitive edge. A leader's ability to construct high-performing teams to carry out the strategy is the defining characteristic that sets them apart from the rest.

In order to thrive as a business strategist, it is crucial to identify a specific area of expertise and showcase it prominently on professional platforms like LinkedIn and freelancer sites. For instance, I specialize in the intersection of marketing, sales, and industry with artificial intelligence, which is an emerging field of thought leadership. By venturing into this distinctive and rapidly evolving domain, I have discovered a lack of competition. To truly set yourself apart from industry norms, it is imperative to direct your attention towards innovative categories that only a few business strategists comprehend. This approach will enable you to carve out your own niche and establish yourself as a standout professional in the field.

It's been my experience that a deep understanding of a company's market is crucial in determining how you're going to establish business moats and, ultimately, craft a strategy. Someone that has the experience and data to thoroughly understand trends and the competitive landscape of specific markets is going to be highly valuable in helping a company develop a strategy in that market.

From my many years of starting and scaling my own firms, before pivoting into strategy consulting, I'm a big believer that "the riches are in the niches". As a serial entrepreneur in the data, insights and analytics sector, I know it inside and out and it's where I spend the bulk of my consulting time. There's a misnomer that if you're all things to all people, your business will scale faster. I find the inverse to be true. The more defined I am about what I do and the sectors I serve, the faster I scale. It means saying "no" to things that aren't a fit but also ensures that the "hell yes!" projects always end up on my plate.

To truly stand out in your chosen niche, consider the power of cross-disciplinary expertise. Instead of confining yourself to a single specialized field, combine knowledge and skills from multiple domains relevant to your niche.

Regularly overlooked is the importance of not always speaking. Nelson Mandela used to talk about his father who was a tribal chief. Mandela was sometimes allowed to be at the chiefs meeting, and he remembered two distinct features: 1. They sat in a circle. 2. His father always spoke last. It struck him later in life that his father was always speaking with an appreciation of everyone else's input, which made him the best informed person in the group.

I would put "Add value" before communicating your value. To add value you need to bring differentiated capabilities, experiences and skills to the table. Once you have concrete examples of how you have added strategic value to your company/project/role, then you are ready to look for ways to more widely communicate or share those successes. Just don't put the cart before the horse.

Too often strategy is considered a "once a year" exercise. A "set it and forget it" mindset. There's often also little agreement about what strategy is and what it does. It gets lost, uncoordinated and messy in a lot of orgs, leading to a lack of focus and clarity...and many strategy implementations fail because of a lack of monitoring and measurement. Ironically, most strategists aren't great at measuring the performance of the very strategies they create. I'm a data wonk and measurement is the most important part of any strategy implementation I lead. Measure what matters...then refine, measure again, learn...on repeat!

As a leader and collaborator, it's important to stay focused on the objectives. I tend to think (as perhaps most humans do) in terms of three things: What do we want to Achieve, Preserve, and Avoid? By articulating these three fundamentals, the ability to communicate and create value becomes laser focused and crystal clear.

For some reason, creating needlepoint versions of slide decks isn't resonating with my colleagues. But it makes me happy. And they're not reliant on the cloud.

The pace of change in all industries continues to increase and the companies that not just survive, but actually thrive, are those that have a very agile strategy. And you can't be agile if you are regularly (or constantly) getting feedback.

It's not always about competing relentlessly with your colleagues; sometimes, collaborating with them can lead to a more profound and nuanced understanding of a subject, something that only experience can impart. Ability to take feedback is essential to your success equation. Feedback helps you grow and often whoever you're working for has an idea to accomplish something. This is why they give you the task or employ you in the first place. You should seek to know if you're getting things right so you can adjust accordingly. People are more comfortable with knowing they are engaging with someone who are happy to work with their preferences

It is important to seek feedback after wrapping every strategy project. Apart from personal feedback, it is imperative to hold a retrospective on the processes that were employed in the project. As teams strive to be agile, sometimes the only agile part of a project is daily stand-up calls. Teams need to think about "what went well" and "what could be better" and define clear actions and learnings.

When equipped and trained on having a strong networking strategy you're already proactive about staying ahead of emerging trends which further stamp your proficiency and expertise. When I joined ION as a fresher, I did not have the technical expertise and experience to contribute to projects. However, being proactive and taking ownership of tasks garnered trust in stakeholders which helped me transition to handling multiple projects in a short time. Here is how I displayed my desire to contribute: - taking meeting notes and sharing clear actions after a call - ownership of projects that do not require technical expertise, for eg. Often, people with less practical knowledge fail to succeed with their business plans. Get in the field, do some sales, understand the customer and pain of salespeople, service them, understand the operational activities first, and then come up with what you want. Practical knowledge will add much value and make it more useful than merely showing it in a PPT and Excel spreadsheet.?? Find out what has worked and what has failed in the past. It will save you time, money, and failures.??

Learn how to anticipate change needed, help your clients learn how to do it. We over emphasize implementing change, minimize the importance of designing effective change and spend little-no-effort in anticipating change early and often.
