What are the most effective ways to show your boss you are ready for a promotion?

In my opinion, every manager who ever hired someone seeks one thing above all else and it's common in every situation. They want someone they can count on. To do there work and get desired results is a minimum, but to support others, to look out for the team, to promote the mission, to come forward with ideas, to challenge status quo with selflessness....these things all get noticed. An observant leader is acknowledging and appreciating this behavior, thus getting more of it. Are they energy givers? Do they help those around them grow? Is this not leading by example? What's not to like when considering more responsibility for this person?

Try to make your manager look good in the eyes of his/her manager. It goes a long way to showing you're ready for the next step.

When a project lulls while waiting on feedback from the client, budget redetermination, or any of the many reasons a project can stall, make that "downtime" a time you upgrade a skillset. Take some additional training, come up with drills to keep your skills sharp and ask if there are other active projects you can work on.
