Lateral movement is one of the top abused methods for SMB. Using host-based firewall controls to limit inbound and outbound SMB traffic on non-File Shares and domain Controller can aid in the deterrence of SMB-Based Lateral Movement, a measure I often don’t see in environments, yet holds massive benefits.

Turning off version 1 is basically a necessity. Don't use it unless you don't care about the data being stored and transmitted. If you can limit everything to v3, them you should do so.

Older versions have weak spots that attackers can exploit, just like the WannaCry incident showed. Choosing the latest version, with improved security features, is like having a high-tech security system. It ensures your digital space is well-protected, just like your home. It won't support those Server 2008R2 servers that you should have decommissioned years ago because they are a liability waiting to happen.

Believe it or not, more often in the Red Team Assessments we do encounter Shared Folders with everyone's access allowed, and it's much more common to have configuration files with credentials/keys for databases, applications, privileged domain user accounts, and a lot more stored in them.
