1 Set clear goals

I agree that knowing the purpose and objectives of the speech allow one to give a more effective and thorough feedback. I also believe that one can provide feedback, such as pertaining to the speaker's delivery (filler word usage, body language, eye contact, et al), regardless of knowing the purpose and/or objectives of the speech.

2 Use the sandwich method

One of the most common and effective ways to provide feedback for public speaking is to use the sandwich method. This means that you start and end your feedback with positive comments, and put the constructive criticism in between. This way, you can acknowledge what your team members did well, such as their content, delivery, body language, or engagement, and also point out what they need to work on, such as their structure, clarity, tone, or pace. By using the sandwich method, you can balance your feedback and avoid making your team members feel discouraged or defensive.

Similar to the sandwich method, I like to use the PIE method. That is, I start by providing Positive comments concerning the speech. I follow those comments with suggestions for Improvement. I then end my feedback by letting the speaker know what I thought was Exceptional or Extraordinary about their speech. Who wouldn't like a slice of PIE when provided in such a manner?

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect and goes along well with public speaking. Be intentional in giving coaching sessions. Do it regularly to continue improving the person while providing constructive feedback. I would also recommend using the sandwich method so the person would not feel demotivated. Sharing your public speaking experiences with the person may also add value so they would know how you improved yourselves.

I'm a member of Toastmasters and highly recommend them to anyone considering public speaking. They are very supportive and encouraging to all involved. I've also met those, in Toastmasters, who you'd never guess were once deathly afraid of public speaking.

Public speaking to me is a combination of arts & science that only gets improved with practice. In order to give feedback, it's best to have private conversation in a mutual respect manner. It takes courage to stand up on stage and deliver the message. Therefore, the effort should be appreciated. This is necessary to boost confidence of a person struggling with public speaking. Providing feedback is not always about pointing goods and bads. It can also be for identification of pathways for better outcomes without shattering the confidence of the other person.

It is suggested not to memorize one's speech, in entirety, since it makes it that much more difficult to recover, if one has a lapse of memory during the speech. Instead, identify a few main points to keep in mind and allow your speech to revolve around them.
