What are the most effective ways to prepare for a promotion interview?

List all your achievements. Then list your relevant achievements. List all the challenges you came across and how you overcame them. Review what is expected within your organization from the role you want to be promoted to. Research the market on what are expected from similar roles. Then build towards how you as an applicant are right choice for that title and how it will add to the organization's goals in consideration of all you have prepared and taken into consideration.

When I applied for my current role and my first interview was scheduled, I reached out to 5 leaders working in the department, and I asked them one question. "How would you describe a successful incumbent of this role?" I got different answers as everyone described it from their own perspective. But I highly recommend asking this question, because the different answers one would get, are the most relevant insights about the role that might not be found in the job description. And based on those answers, relevant examples of successful past experiences should be prepared.

I'd say look up the role at a job site. See what a similar organisation from a similar industry is expecting from a role that you are aspiring for in your own organization. This strategy has helped me bring more to the table. Helped me identify what l need to work on before l ask for a promotion. Another important aspect is to understand how the new role will contribute towards the growth of the organisation. Do I have it in my roadmap. Am I already operating on those lines that showcase my capabilities for the new role. In a startup world, promotion is not just a change in designation but entails enhanced accountability too. A good understanding of whether I have already proved my mettle for the new role matters a lot.

The following are 3 basic, but critical steps to take whilst preparing for an interview for promotion. 1. Be able to describe your contributions to the company thus far and how they're relevant to the new role. 2. Demonstrate how your successes have been aligned with the company's strategic business objectives and where you see your department, and the company, going. 3. Always have, at least 2 relevant, thought out questions that you can bring back to how you can make an impact. Prepare! Prepare! Prepare!. If you haven't caught the theme here, it's preparation. Earlier in my career I struggled with speaking to my achievements and accomplishments. It may have been cultural upbringing or personal values but it felt like bragging vs doing the job I was hired to do. I realized that not speaking up cost me opportunities and so I actively worked on ways to showcase my achievements without feeling inauthentic or that I needed to take a cold shower after. By focusing on others, the value delivered to the organization, the results and impact - it felt less about me and more about making the team and organization better. Additionally providing data made it more objective and less of my opinion and more a quantified impact. Don’t be afraid to speak to what you’ve worked tirelessly to deliver!

Becoming self aware is the key. This includes knowing ourselves, what makes us , us, our strengths, blind spots, known biases. Work with others to recognise blind spots, unacknowledged biases , how you show up to diverse groups of people. It is important to recall and acknowledge our past achievements more so the immediate ones. Reflection on what we have learned through the journey and what we are becoming through the experiences helps in a greater way.

Being a leader involves having a clear vision of what you want to achieve, which is often tied to your personal strengths, values, and goals. Therefore, be prepared to talk about what matters most to you and what you will contribute to the team you will lead. This requires a certain measure of self-awareness, as you will also need to be able to speak about your weaknesses: as a team leader, you cannot do everything on your own and you will need to delegate work to your team. Understanding what you do best and where you will let others step in while you supervise is critical.

Create a great story! Let your story match your responsibilities of your current role and include the things you have done to stand out from your peers.
