What are the most effective ways to pivot your career using your existing skills?

The first step to a 'successful' and less stressful career pivot is to identify the reason(s) you want to change careers in the first place. Failing to identify the 'why' behind your move will ensure that you chase waterfalls and rainbows while increasing your anxiety and frustration in your job search. Try this instead: Ask yourself how you feel: 1/ When you're at work 2/ When you're not at work Pay attention to your first visceral response - aka: your gut reaction to those 2 questions. Then ask yourself why you feel as you do - good or bad. Then dive deeper into the root cause(s) of why you feel what you feel. Themes will emerge. Poor leadership, boring work, toxic culture, etc. Reflect on your 'why' then worry about skills.

I spent about a decade living, breathing, and working as a Chartered Accountant before becoming a Coach. I cannot appreciate how much that career has given me. It’s important to understand that nothing you’ve ever done will go to waste. The skills I acquired and honed as an accountant serve me even now as a coach (building relationships, communication skills, ability to work under pressure, etc.). Take a moment to reflect on all the pieces in your current career and then review the transferrable ones, i.e., the ones you can carry forward with you.

Since I mostly work with women, their number one question is "What skills will I be able to implement from my previous job in my next one?" Or even more so when they are pivoting from a corporate career to starting a business. My answer is always: "everything". Every little bit of knowledge, experience and skill that served you over the years in getting a promotion, executing your job better or simply having a good relationship with your colleagues is a skill worth transfering when pivoting your career.

De acuerdo con mi propia experiencia, pasé casi 7 a?os tratando de cambiar de un área de mi carrera a otra, lo mejor que puedas hacer es aprender. El aprendizaje es la clave. Aprender, aprender, y aprender. Aprender acerca de nuevas metodologías, métodos, técnicas o herramientas de hacer las cosas. Puedes anotarte en diplomados, certificaciones, especializaciones, cursos, charlas o capacitaciones relacionadas con el área al cuál están buscando enfocarte. También, puedes buscar un mentor, una persona que sea especialista/experto en el área en el que tú estás buscando enfocarte, para que te ense?a. Mántene actualizado. Parafraseando a Sénecea, la suerte es cuando el aprendizaje y la oportunidad se encuentran. Hay que estar prepaados.

To take action and pivot your career, you need to build on your "why change" and define your "why change NOW". It will encourage you to dare take the first step towards a new opportunity. Also, working in small steps helps taking action, as it's easier than climbing Everest all at once!
