Objectives depend on your target for observability. Topics such as speed, availability, security, scalability, or keeping things cost-efficient each have separate aims and a unique set of metrics with tools to keep an eye on your network's status. For example, if your focus is speed, bandwidth and latency metrics will be your focus. Availability? Then it'll instead be downtime and MTTR. By getting your priorities straight from the get-go, you’ll have an easier time picking the right metrics and tools. This way, you set a clear performance and reliability benchmark for your network without hassle.

Selecting the right metrics is vital for accurately gauging network performance. Generally, start with basics like bandwidth and latency which highlight data transfer capacity and delays. Your chosen metrics should align with your specific need and network traits. For VoIP systems, jitter and packet loss are crucial as they impact call quality. If you can't have downtime then keep an eye on downtime and MTTR. The goal is to pick metrics that are in tune with your goals of observability without overwhelming yourself with data (which I have done!). Strategically choose those that offer a clear, focused view of your network's functionality and reliability, providing a complete and relevant picture of performance.

Measuring your network performance and reliability requires using tools to collect, analyze, and report data from your network devices and applications. There are many options, from simple ping and traceroute commands to more complex network monitoring and testing software. For instance, ping is a command-line tool that sends a test packet to a destination and measures the round-trip time and packet loss. Traceroute traces the route of a packet from source to destination, displaying hops and delays. iperf measures bandwidth and throughput of a network connection by sending/receiving data streams. Diagnostic tools can provide misleading results when not taking into consideration the technologies that make up the entire pathway. Client software that performs deep packet analysis can add latency which is not representative of the networks true performance.
