In my experience, an elevator pitch needs to be time-bound and power packet; i.e. To hook your audience with a compelling USP of your product that addresses the problem, all within 30 seconds. This will ensure that your audience is engaged for further listening. I corroborate the statement from Ekaterina Yazkova in the comments, and it is very important to have a 2-way conversation and build a real connection. Lastly, the tone of your speech should be energetic and with enthusiasm. Ensure statements are not repetitive.

One piece of advice that really stuck with me: people remember problems and stories. What's your story, and what's the problem you're trying to solve? Knowing those points are more important to being memorable than having a memorized and rehearsed pitch, and you can be more authentic at the same time :)

A great way to build rapport with someone is to find linkages in your background or interests. Goes without saying, you can learn a lot from someone's LinkedIn profile. Maybe you know someone in common ("I saw you are connected to x, how do you know her? I worked closely with her at my last company"). If the person is common is a close friend, reach out to that person for any additional background on the person you are trying to reach out to (note: use your discretion as to whether to bring this up! It may just serve as useful context, you don't want to seem like a stalker). Prepare a few questions for the person about the industry, their career, advice you want to get - so that you seem prepared and you get what you need from the call.

Follow-Up in a subtle way. Don't push. This might lead them to ignoring you and never coming back no matter how much value you have to offer them. Always respect their time and impose the art of "conveying" rather than "convincing".

In my experience, Product Management may be performed without deep understanding of where user value (as seen by the business owner) lies; this can result in “featuritis” where Product Managers focus on maximize the quantity of “boxes ticked”, rather than measurable return on investment. Also, a missing piece may be “Big-S” Strategy, i.e., that there is a plan to move an organization to a more competitive capability set. Don’t put all your chips in the ‘PM pot’ - have things to connect with others on outside of product management. Personal interests and hobbies are not off the table for conversation! Leave the chat with the other person remembering you not just as a PM, but as a person (preferably one that they would like to get to know more). Don’t focus it just on yourself either - be curious and ask others about themselves, allow them to share who they are with you.
