What are the most effective ways to incentivize employees to support a company's sustainability goals?

We have a framework that we call BE-DO-SAY, which reminds companies to first establish a clear set of sustainability goals that align with the core business. And lead from the top by living the values that they espouse (BE). Then take concrete and visible actions towards achieving the goals, including ones that may be difficult, sacrifice short term profitability for longer term benefits, and / or actions that demonstrate industry leadership on a topic (DO). Only when the BE and DO is addressed, should companies start communicating their sustainability credentials and achievements to external audiences (SAY). Employees will be motivated to contribute to these efforts when they see a clear roadmap and commitment to sustainability.

Foster a culture of continuous learning, growth, and recognition, all while encouraging proactive engagement in the betterment of the workplace and the broader community. 1. Begin by educating employees about the company's vision, mission and goals. 2. Acknowledge and celebrate employees for their dedicated efforts. 3. Encourage employees to acquire new skills that can contribute to sustainable practices. 4. Promote volunteering for social causes and uplifting the community. 5. Keep the communication channels transparent and open to feedback. 6. Discuss the impact of employees' efforts that align with the company's values and contribute to a better world, while also experiencing their personal and professional growth.

Incentives may or may not work. Before considering incentives, organization should firstly reflect on its own purpose and the reason why it exists, then engage employee to align their personal purpose with the organization’s purpose, e.g. how can the organization empower employees to achieve their personal purpose. Purpose should be the North Star that guides the organization’s sustainability strategy. Achieving sustainability goals are more effective when there’s alignment between corporate purpose and personal purpose.

Another key aspect is to align sustainability with the purpose of the company. By doing this, the benefit will be two-fold: one on getting buy-in from the employees in the company's sustainability initiatives; and another on keeping the company's purpose in minds and hearts of the employees. Promoting ownership of sustainability agenda by employees is another step. While this step can be challenging to implement but it can bring ripple effects not only on sustainability initiatives but on human resource management aspects such as retention and employee engagement.

In my experience, education transforms awareness into action, making employees not just aware but capable and committed to making a positive impact. But make time for it during working hours, to ensure it's given the focus it deserves.

Behavioral science and habit formation can be used to train employees on sustainability in a number of ways. Here are a few examples: ??Make it easy to accomplish. For example, you could provide employees with easy-to-follow checklists or cheat sheets, or you could develop training modules that can be completed online at the employee's convenience. ??Make it rewarding. For example, you could give employees points for who demonstrate sustainable behaviors. ??Make it a habit. This can be done by providing employees with regular reminders and support. For example, you could send employees weekly email reminders about sustainable practices, or you could create a sustainability challenge for employees to participate in.

Clear Goals, Bright Path Its true - what gets measured gets done. But measurable goals also help with internal orientation. Put them in your KPI dashboard so they have the same prominence as commercial KPIS. Also consider specific targets for each department to make them feel attainable and crucially own-able. And don't forget to celebrate milestones along the way.

Communicating these goals effectively to the employees will help them understand the importance of their individual contributions towards the larger sustainability agenda. This can include recognizing top performers, rewarding innovative ideas or initiatives in sustainability, or offering incentives for meeting specific target Furthermore, creating a culture of sustainability within the organization can greatly impact employee engagement.

The best way to incentivise employees to behave in a certain way is to align the goals with their personal values. This is different for different groups within the company, for example, there are many employees of the current generation who are motivated by things that are different from previous generations. It is best to specify what the company is trying to achieve and understand how each group might be aligned with that goal and motivated to behave in a certain way. Once you have identified the above, you can then align implementation of these behaviours with incentives that are relevant for the particular employee group.

Inculcating a sustainability culture (easier said than done) through a compelling narrative and continuous internal and external deeds(to demonstrate sincerity, not greenwashing) is perhaps the only long and arduous way to achieve this vision.

This can lead to a stronger sense of community within the workplace, as well as increased job satisfaction and loyalty. Overall, fostering a culture of sustainability can create a sense of purpose and fulfillment that goes beyond just the bottom line, and contributes to a more positive and meaningful work environment.

Make the work as collaborative as possible. Apart from checking in with everyone via regular pulse surveys and the like, give employees a solid option to get involved on an ongoing basis. This can help in a lot of ways, be it for sourcing input, brainstorming ideas, discussing new initiatives, implementing projects or championing them. Every employee should be offered a chance to help — and many will.

Seeking feedback and input is a good yardstick to measure your stakeholders awareness, interest and other markers. If sought and managed well, the feedback will help you make necessary adjustments to your Sustainability initiatives, ensure the right stakeholders are adequately involved, and may ease the executional pressures from you and/ or your organisation. Your colleagues may have good ideas that give a much needed boost to your initiatives.

Connect employees to customer’s sustainability needs, and continuously seek feedback from the customers/stakeholders on how you are executing on the set goals. Education and Collaboration is required across the value-chain!
