What are the most effective ways to get started in Algorithm research?

You can start by looking into different sources, but I will recommend having one and only one book as your guide in the beginning. What you really need to start Algorithmic Trading and Development is the working logic of the flow. The first step is to know how algorithms in the stock market work, what all parameters are there to take into account, and what approaches are available to tackle those. Then you start your learning journey.

Before jumping into any solution we must always understand the problem first and then try to see which of the available algorithms suits the best. There are tons of resources available all around in forms of articles, white paper, PDFs which can be referred to get an insight on algorithms and their use cases and results. Getting hands on must be the next way forward to see how the algorithms fit my needs. Keep reading daily to get form grip on all possible and available algorithmic designs and patterns as it really helps when it comes to designing solutions keeping optimisation aspects.

Simply reading and studying the code may not help in core understanding of algorithms. Our mind remembers and understands in the form of pictures so try to watch video depictions of working of the algorithms. You can also take a pen and paper and hand run the algorithm to get a deeper insight of it. This will also benefit in finding the best algorithm when we encounter a coding problem in real world.

Practice is what helps you learn and explore more on algorithms. Practice on online platforms regularly. Also after implementing your solution, try looking for solutions posted by others people as it may help broaden your prospective on how to differently solve the same problem.

Practicing doesn’t have to be only through coding but practicing the basics will help you a lot. Pretend to be the interpreter and write all the variables on a paper/file in a table with initial values, go over every iteration and add a row with updated values. This might look cumbersome but practicing this will unlock your potential and for the next problems you’ll be able to do it in your head unconsciously.

One thing I have found useful is to try and implement an algorithm that I have read about. It helps you learn about the structure of the algorithm, it's performance and the software perspective of it.

One particular algorithm may not be enough to solve your problem. There may be a need to tweak it as per your need. In some cases, combination of multiple algorithms has to be implemented to achieve the desired result. Hence experimenting different ideas and reaching that expertise to find the most useful algorithm which suits your need is helpful.

I always think that understanding and solving a problem is possible through experiencing it. For this reason, I think it would be better to proceed by trying the solution and solving the errors you encounter, rather than taking it from somewhere and using it directly.

You can use the programming language of your own choice, but it is important that you solve the exercises on your own. If you have done that then facing a real-life problem will not be daunting. You should be able to reduce the real-life problem to one of the problems you have already solved.

The best way to collaboration is by looking for problems on different forums like stack exchange, Quora, etc. Do not be reactive, be active, if you will solving problems of others, your problems will seem easy to you.

Algorithms are made to solve problems, if there is a problem around you, try to solve it, try to find the best algorithms for that problem, share your solutions with others and improve on it.

Try to think on how you would improve the algorithm. It can be mathematically or the way it's implemented. This will test your understanding to the limit and will help the community.
