What are the most effective ways to get promoted in a small fashion design company?

Networking is essential for any fashion designer, especially in a small company where you have fewer opportunities to meet new people. You should build strong relationships with your manager, co-workers, suppliers, and clients. You should also seek mentors, sponsors, or allies who can support your career development and advocate for you. Networking can help you learn new skills, gain insights, and discover new opportunities.

Be vocal early on about your goals with your superior so they are aligned with your growth and you can both have clarity on the path to a promotion. If they show hesitance and are unclear about whether it's possible, it's a sign you might need to look elsewhere down the line.

I don't agree that you need to build a portfolio to ask for a promotion as your direct supervisor will know your capabilities which include things that can not be put on a portfolio (loyalty, attention to detail, communication style, etc)

I don’t know if I would focus on portfolio, but I do believe it’s incredibly helpful to keep learning, growing & refining your skills. The better you become in your specific area of design the more obvious choice you become for promotion & advancement. If you make the business successful, your success will be inevitable too.
