What are the most effective ways to evaluate your own work?

This is the most important step. When we start any project we often get over zealous and set unrealistic goals without considering the hiccups and path blocks. 1. Assess the goals carefully and break them them into short term, mid term and long term with carefully laid down actions and results. 2. Re assess the above after a short period of time and tweak. 3. Keep a daily log to be on track. 4. Check your performance against the set parameters and give your self rating. Change your POA and re align resources. 5. This will not only help you check your performance but will help you improve effectiveness and efficiency. 6. Get set go and you will find there’s no looking back. Be pragmatic ambitious but not overtly self critical

One thing I've found helpful is completing the pre-work, preparation is key. Goals need a foundation and understanding not only what you want to accomplish but also the impact from those actions you wish to make requires understanding what you are delivering and to whom. Understanding your audience, their need, and the specific impact you want to make will help gain clarity on what and how you will measure your work. Timelines will also be based on the complexity of the work and impact you want to make. Will the event itself be measured, or the post event action be the most crucial component? Laying the foundation through research, understanding, will help determine what SMART goals need to be set.

The SMART framework is indeed a powerful tool for goal setting in live events. However, it's important to note that the nature of live events often requires flexibility and adaptability. Goals may need to be adjusted in real-time as circumstances change. Additionally, while quantitative measures are important, qualitative feedback such as audience engagement and satisfaction levels are equally crucial for evaluating the success of a live event.

To effectively evaluate your own work, follow these steps: 1. Establish clear goals and criteria. 2. Regularly assess your progress against the set goals. 3. Reflect on your performance and identify areas for improvement. 4. Seek feedback from mentors or colleagues. 5. Adjust your approach based on the feedback received. 6. In my experience, when you are evaluating "your own work" rather than that of a department or company, surveys, interviews and polls are over-kill and usually not even an option. The things to focus on are self-reflection and potentially feedback from a small circle (supervisor, colleague, mentor) if the type of project warrants it. When it comes to day-to-day projects on which you want to do your best work, honest self-reflection is key. This can be done periodically during the project and should definitely be done afterwards. A question to consider is "would my performance on this reflect the impression I want to make at my next performance review or when interviewing for my next role." If not, decide what to improve going forward.

Similar to 360° reviews as part of Performance Management in HR - assessing your own skills should use a similar full-scope frame work. I like to seek feedback from those I work most closely with first, then seek feedback from those I’m newly collaborating with and finally at least 1 person I don’t work with often. I find this offers breadth of opinions and perspectives in assessing myself, while also getting diverse feedback from different collaborators. Then using all feedback to constructively assess where/how I can improve and ask clarifying questions, if needed. Lastly, don’t take it personal - feedback is for personal growth and development.

Not all feedback is worthwhile feedback, surveys, polls, and observations may be helpful, but understanding who you are asking is key. I will normally get feedback from three individuals, and I prefer to leverage feedback from someone who does not always agree with me, is honest, and has a full understanding of not only the objective but also the project scope, audience, and impact goals. This aids in the self-awareness factor which is key. Never choose someone that will always champion your ideas or agree with you. That thwarts growth. Remember everyone has opinions and not everyone's opinions align with the work you are doing.

At the end of the day, it's all about the numbers. By using quantifiable metrics relevant to your role or relevant to a project, the numbers will help you judge your progress, where you've succeeded and where you have work to do. For instance, if you’re in sales, track your sales numbers against targets. If you're in a project-based role, consider the success rate and timeliness of project completion. If you're evaluating how you did with a project, how did you do compared to the initial goals set out? Then, and only then, should you get feedback from others because then, you'll be able to ask more specific questions to get more relevant feedback. Starting with the numbers is the most critical first step.
